What to do about a wasps nest?

We have found one by one of our windows and I have no idea what to do!

Do we leave it and treat at the end of the season? if so how?
Do we need pest control?

I want something as humane as possible but also need to safeguard my 1 yr old as its above his bedroom window...

I would get pest control in. It might be ok now but there can be 1000's of them by the autumn and that's when they get a bit drunk on fermenting fruit and sting more.

We had one a few years ago just outside the back door. It was fascinating to watch the man in all his gear. He said the nests can be huge by September

The council got rid of ours last summer. 54 quid for 5 mins work! Not too humane either - he sprayed some stuff in and we had to stay in while they went crazy. Tbh I'd be bothered about bees, but I find it hard to care about wasps!

Call pest control would be my advice and just let them get rid. We had an enormous one in our loft, it was horrible. Even the guy who came to sort it said it was horrific.

Get rid of them now. We just got rid of them from our house, cost us £40. They were in the cavity, got in through an air brick and were plopping out onto the carpet through a ventilation grill inside.
It is not humane but they are wasps.

Alternatively if you can see the nest and get reasonably near to it, you can use a foam spray from a DIY shop, I think it costs around £5. DH did this when there was one in our shed a few years ago and did the trick.

We have another one now somewhere on the outside of the house and before I get pest control out I am going to try that.

I have spent approximately ten billion pounds in the past year on removing nests. The pest control companies advised me that if you catch them at the small-nest stage then the DIY spray foam works, but anything more and you need to call someone in.

Am also giving one of those fake-nest Waspinator things a whirl this year. Can't yet report whether or not they work.

YoniAsOldAsYoFeel · 09/08/2013 20:06

How big is it? I had one in my shed about the size of my fist and the foam stuff worked fine.

AMumInScotland · 09/08/2013 20:07

I got rid of one with a product from the DIY shop - it wasn't foam, but a dry powder which you "puff" into the hole. But if you do that you need to be sure you can et back indoors quickly in case they get annoyed at you! Not recommended for up ladders, for obvious reasons.

I work in a DIY shop selling these wasp killers. I wouldn't advise it for houses, sheds yes but not houses.
Basically it will cover the outside of the nest, which means the wasps will burrow into the brickwork of your home and eventually end up inside.

Pest control is the thing to do, believe me.
