Hi all,

I did post of here earlier but as new to this site I did it in a wrong section so trying this... My partner and I are currently living in Bedfordshire and are seriously looking into moving somewhere close to the sea, in a friendly town/village, that has good schools and low on crime, basically a safe and lovely place for your kids to grow up...

If anyone has any suggestions it would be much appreciated :-D

We moved from London to Devon last year - live just outside city but have beaches 8 miles in either direction!!!! It's amazing - have a 2 year old and was best thing we have done! Ds is so happy on beach - it's all so much more relaxed we love it!!!!!

southmummy2011 · 07/08/2013 20:11

Oh schools amazing! We are not worried at all about that!!!

Southmummy I am SO happy you said that, as we really want to move to Devon but earlier I read on this site a lot of people saying the locals don't accept newcomers which I found hard to believe that's why I wanted to post something myself, and would love my boys to grow up living an outdoor lifestyle, what's Devon like in the winter?

Ive just bought a place in Devon near the sea. The climate in Winter is generally mild and wet I believe. However there are a number of micro climates: The moors are very wet, so the best place to buy climate wise would be in the rain shadow of either moor, ie to the East side where it will be drier. North Devon would be colder and poorer than South Devon but cheaper for property and with lovely scenery though its beautiful everywhere that I looked... Good luck.

Hi- glad you're thinking of Devon! Everyone has been great - all mummy groups have been lovely and the possibilities for things to do on weekend are endless!!! It seems to be a few degrees cooler than London obviously because of being in massively built up area! Our area didn't really ever have crazy snow until a few years ago - but pretty much same as anywhere else! As other poster said there are some micro climates. South Devon is a lot more accessible than north but it is beautiful up there! Good luck with your searches!!!!

mummaemma · 08/08/2013 16:44

south devon is great though. we are on holiday there in a few weeks. Smile

Look at Wirral - lovely area, good schools, friendly, housing not too expensive, loads to do with families, over the water from Liverpool (also fab), and various different beaches - plus welsh hills and coastal towns less than an hour away. West of M53 quieter and prettier though there are nice bits east of it too. Moved here recently and love it!! PM me if you want more info. We also have a bit of a micro climate which means we often miss the rain Smile

East Dorset. Right on the coast near Christchurch and close to New Forest too. Dd goes to good local juniors and secondary school outstanding. Love it here and can't think of anywhere I would rather live!

mummaemma · 08/08/2013 16:51

some parts of south devon are sooooo expensive. Love salcombe.

is is devon you are interested in or open to suggestions?

magimedi · 08/08/2013 16:52

I'm with mummaemma Eastbourne & around is great.

We moved from Devon to East Sussex as a choice!! The wet winters in Devon really got to me.

But I have no school age DCs so can't comment on that, but all the children in our road seem to be happy & no complaints about the schools they go to.

And you will find property much cheaper here than most of Devon.

Swansea, you'll never leave.

I'm in Ramsgate Kent.
Big downside to Kent can be that it is totally selective secondary education in state sector.
I think this is a bad thing and would choose a different part of country if possible to avoid this!

More than that do you want small town? or bigger town/ city feel?

How remote do you want to be and what will you do for work?
