ceramic hobs - yes or no?

just planning a new kitchen for a new house - we have issues with gas and it would all be much easier if we didn't need it...kitchen planner suggests either ceramic or induction hob..i'm not a fan of electric hobs at all really...does anyone have any experience of ceramic hobs as i understand you need special pans for induction ones, plus they require extra thick granite and are problematic to fit above the built under oven we are having...thanks!

I wouldn't have a ceramic hob, but an induction hob is another matter. Fast, responsive, easy to clean, economical to run. You just need iron or stainless steel pans - you don't have to spend a fortune. I don't know where you got the idea about granite worktops being needed - we have an induction hob with a wooden worktop, but I can't recall choice of worktop being an issue (at least as far as the hob was concerned). what is the issue with gas? Do you not have mains gas?

As a gas cooker user I would only consider an induction hob. I have cooked an all sorts of electric hobs and hate the way they are slow to respond to being turned up or down.

In fact I would go so far to say that I wouldn't even buy a house that didn't have mains gas.

Another here with induction hob, wooden worktop, drawer directly underneath. So easy to keep clean (just use a vinegar based glass cleaner).

And I got a set of pans thrown in with the appliances I bought.

I love my induction hob. You can put potatoes on to boil & walk away. High heat for jam too & so clean. My DM had to have one after staying with me.

We have a ceramic hob, and have had it for 17 or 18 years. I'm very happy with it. Very clean way to cook. Bosch. Dark glass top. I turn the hotplate to maximum to heat up quickly then turn back. Hard to get a very very very low temperature, but that doesn't bother me. Very thin and drawers underneath. I did use induction hob at a holiday let earlier this year... looked very similar but was hard for me to get used to in just 3 days.

I love my induction hob. So quick to heat up and cool down - which was a good thing when DS was little (and now!).

I use Method Tub Scrub (Homebase) and it removes everything.

Detest ceramic hobs - too slow to heat, too slow to cool, don't go low enough etc.

Love induction - very adjustable, changes heat setting v quickly, goes very hot and very low, v easy to clean

thanks all v helpful...am persuaded by the induction argument! we do have gas but would require considerable re-routing...long story, wont bore you all

I would want an induction hob in an future home.
Getting new pans was worth it.

I HATE my ceramic hob. dh wouldnt agree to re-routing the gas due to rising energy costs (he works in energy) and we couldn't afford induction. grr.
