Living opposite a police station

Would you see it as a positive or negative?

(I'm putting DD to bed in a minute and may be some time,
so won't be able to reply straight away).

depends on the station!
if it's a little branch type place, acting as a hub for community officers, then maybe that would be ok.

but there's no way I'd live opposite a station with a custody suite or a response team based there - too much noise.

I do and I love it, it feels so safe.
It's a small town though and no noise from tehre at all.

Will find out if there is a custody suite. I imagine there are response cars though - it's a police station in medium sized town.

I lived by a fire station - after the first few weeks I barely noticed the sirens...

It'll make it harder to sell though.

I live pretty much next door to a fire station. Can't see the difference. Never been a problem as we have good double glazing so can't hear a thing

What Charlotte said.

Even big cities will have police stations that are operational 24 hours (noisy) and have custody blocks (dodgy people being released outside your house) and then those stations that don't have custody facilities and maybe just house neighbourhood teams and maybe CID. The latter won't cause you any problems (except maybe parking).

fire engines respond to far fewer 999 call than police though, so i don't think it's quite the same

could you park up and watch it for an hour on a weekend evening?

Yes, but fire engines normally respond from the fire station whereas police cars will be more likely to respond to call outs from patrol so there are a few swings and roundabouts there.

I live near an ambulance station and you really do tune out sirens after a while.

The other thing to bear in mind about larger police stations is that they will also have ne'er-do-wells reporting for bail regularly if you have concerns about the sort of people who are likely to be hanging about.
