Where's the chimney breast?

We've just moved into a house which has a gas fire in the chimney breast in the living room. It's a semi-detached house and the adjoining house is a mirror image with a joint chimney stack on the roof.

I was hoping that we could install a log burning stove but I've realised that there is no chimney breast on the 1st floor and I can't see one in the attic either (it's not open between the two houses). What is going on? I could be mistaken about the attic but it definitely seems to be missing from the 1st floor.

Thanks.

Can you see an outlet for the gas flue?

Are your first floor rooms the same size as the ground floor? Could the chimney be hidden by a false wall?

We have a chimney breast downstairs but none upstairs because we had it removed for our loft conversion. We retained it downstairs for appearance. Of course, we don't have a fire. If we wanted a gas fire, we would need to hide the flue under the floorboards of upstairs, and then out the side wall.

I don't think the chimney breast would necessarily be visible on the 1st floor unless there was an opening for a fireplace. In my first flat the chimney opening had been completely plastered over - you wouldn't have known it was there if it hadn't been for the chimney on the roof!

It could have been removed to make the room bigger

Ask neighbour? If houses same or should have been they may know.

It might be a flueless fire ?! Especially if they took out the fireplace above ?!?

Thanks for the replies. Will have to investigate the flue. We've not met the neighbours yet but will try and find out.

I was mostly confused as the chimney is still there - something must be supporting it. We also asked the surveyor if it would be possible to reinstate a real fire and he said yes. You would think he would haiive noticed if there was no chimney breast.

Actually - think I have found in fitted wardrobe! One section is slightly less deep than the others but only by a few inches. Guess that must be it!

That's it! Ours is like that in the main bedroom they've put a run of wardrobes over the chimney breast.
