Please find me a rug for the living room!

We have been slowly doing up out living room. We are almost done but have been hunting for a rug for months and cannot find one. My 7 month old is constantly rolling around on the hard wooden floor and I keep wishing I had a nice soft rug for him. Plus it would be good to have it sorted before winter to make the room more cosy.

I don't really like shagpile, and don't really want to go down the Persian route. We are fairly conservative in our taste although would consider a pattern. I have seen the beautiful rugs on those rug builder websites and would definitely consider those. But the are quite pricey and all of them have a looped pile. I presume tufted (is that the right word?!) would be easier to clean with a toddler and baby?

So colour scheme is:

walls

curtains in pearls grey under the patterned fabric section

We have two sofas. One is a natural linen in a beigey colour and one is a light brown herringbone, both quite classic styles.

The only rug I have found that I thought might pull everything together quite well was from the Martha Stewart home website in the US but they wouldn't ship here and when I looked into one of the shipping companies it would have cost a fortune. It is a big risk for something you can't see in the flesh.

It needs to be quite large, around 230cm x 220cm give or take a few cm.

This rug which is actually not very me at all but I saw it in a picture of a dining room somewhere like houzz and thought it would tie things together quite well.

have you looked at the ikea rugs - I got an amazing geometric grey/white/black one about 6 months ago and I totally love it. very low pile - maybe flat woven??? - and fine with a toddler and a baby.
the good ones sell out very quickly - there was another one I wanted I think it's called Stockholm - and it's never in stock.
I also like the rugs at Made - although they maybe a little bit busy for you.
and yes shipping by US isn't ideal - I got some curtains from pottery barn and had to ship them all back.
jonathan adler have a great rug building service on their website but they are crazy expensive.....so maybe that's a no no with young kids.

Thanks cooper. I have looked at ikea a few times but haven't seen anything that would suit that room. I do need a rug for my baby's room and was going to look at ikea so will have another browse.

Hadn't though of Made, I will check them out. I did like a few on the Loaf site b

Hadn't though of Made, I will check them out. I did like a few on the Loaf site but we don't live near the showroom to check them out and I couldn't tell properly from the site alone. It's so tricky as rugs seem to be super plain or quite patterned.

I have had another play this evening on the rug builder on The Natural Rug Company site. I found a combo I like for about £400 which isn't too bad actually. So I think I will look a whole longer and then consider that if nothing else comes up.

I wish we had some of the big US stores here. I love pottery barn! Especially at Christmas.

Thanks again.

Have a look at wovenground too. We got our last one from there.

'not too bad' is not good enough reason to spend £400 in my view.

SunnyUpNorth · 01/08/2013 08:44

Sorry Waffly I don't think my comfort zone is ready for so much pattern!

A couple of good website there though to have a browse through, thanks.

This is a bit like the one you linked to OP

This is also rather nice

John Lewis is good for rugs too. Ones made with viscose are lovely and soft underfoot and have a slight sheen which looks good.

This is a nice rug but bit small

Thanks pannacotta. I can't see your ikea links but I had a look on there anyway.

We did have a look in John Lewis but again weren't really taken with anything. They had some lovely ones but I think you were either a slightly odd size or not quite the right colour for the room.

I keep telling myself it is one of those things that you have to wait to come across but I do want to get it sorted....we have been here 18 months with bare floors!
