Moving to Yorkshire - Can anyone help?

My DH has a new job North of Doncaster and we are looking to move within a 30/45 min commute of this. Can anyone recommend areas to live, we are looking at a small town/village location ?.

Also tips on finding a good secondary school.

Any advice/help would be great.

How far north of Doncaster?

Bawtry is nice but it's east of Doncaster. If your kids are bright and you're east of Doncaster then the Grammar School at Gainsborough could be an option.

aliny · 29/07/2013 13:04

Thanks Viva

12 miles north of Doncaster.

Is it entrance tests for Grammar schools? unsure of education system as we are moving from Scotland.
DS is 12 and is doing well at his current school

It's the eleven plus for the Gainsborough grammar, which is over the border in Lincs. I don't think that that area of Yorkshire is grammar schools, so will be normal comps.

There are quite a few kids from the Doncaster area who try to get their kids into the Gainsborough school. But it's very over subscribed and if he's 12 then he won't get in, they're oversubscribed by 5 kids already in that year.

aliny · 29/07/2013 13:42

He will be Thirteen in November.

A good school is our priority in choosing a place to live.
Have looked at Bawtry it looks like a nice place, my DH is staying near there, he is commuting back to Scotland on a Friday night till we find somewhere!

So he'd be going into year eight which is over subscribed. My dd is the same age and passed the eleven plus and didn't get in due to it been oversubscribed. 228 passed for 180 places!

I don't know anything about the Yorkshire comps, look on the bbc website for league tables.

aliny · 29/07/2013 13:53

Nightmare! knew schools system was difficult ,we're to spoilt only 450 pupils at my ds current school and its very good.

Will look at league tables

Thanks x

Don't move to Doncaster!! There are some lovely places in Yorkshire, Doncaster is not one of them. What about around Leeds/Sheffield areas?

aliny · 29/07/2013 15:04

Would like a nice village as long as its an ok commute for DH

Mmm, other places I've driven through which look nice are Tickhill, gringley on the hill, epworth.

Places I've drive through which looked shite, Doncaster, selby, Thorne.

I'm an incomer, and I like Donny! Hayfield, Hallcross and McAuley are all good (outstanding) high schools, Places north of Doncaster tend to be pit villages , although 12 miles puts it at Barnsley or Scunthorpe areas, so you could look to those schools. I'm sure you can find good ones near. Contact the educational authorities in the areas you are interested in,(they should send you a booklet of all the schools they cover- or just tap into the internet)
Bawtry is twee and soulless.

INeedALieIn · 29/07/2013 15:46

12 miles north. If it is around the A1 you have lits if options. Pontefract-ish at Darrington, badsworth, ackworth, Womersley, kirk smeaton. Fyryher niryh to church fenton, Aberford, Boston spa (Tadcaster grammar area).

Closer oi Doncaster but north ish you have high Melton, Sprotbrough, cadeby, Cusworth, barnbrough.

Lots of options. Snoop around Rightmove. If anything or anywhere catches your eye let us know and we can give an idea if the area.

INeedALieIn · 29/07/2013 19:35

I agree with MayI, Bawtry has more than its fair share of wannabee wags trying to hook up with a 10 bob millionaire.

Not my thing.

formicadinosaur · 29/07/2013 21:18

Isn't Retford and Lincoln nice?

INeedALieIn · 29/07/2013 22:23

Yes, lovely, but aren't they quite far south and op dh is working north?

Hulababy · 29/07/2013 22:27

I was born and grew up in Doncaster. My family and DH's family still live there. I also worked at a secondary school as a teacher in Doncaster for a while.

DH and I live in Sheffield. We wouldn't chose to move back tbh - well, not to live in Doncaster itself. Much prefer Sheffield personally.

However, on the outskirts of Doncaster area there are some nice places to live. But it depends on what you want - town based or more village style.

Schools will be a big factor I assume too so maybe start your search there and consider which schools you'd be willing to try.

aliny · 30/07/2013 11:48

Have looked at a few propertys in Snaith, Sprotbrough, Retford and Tadcaster.

I have been looking at schools using the Department for Education legaue tables, this is all new to me !

The M62 is a quiet road and so within hassle-free commute would be East Yorks. South Cave/North Cave villages fall into catchment of South Hunsley which is doing well. Many commute from there to Leeds centre. DH has colleague who commutes from Pontefract to Hull and he has to be within 1 hr travel for on-call commitments. Howden is sweet little town but no 6th form.

iseenodust · 30/07/2013 12:35

Tadcaster lovely, expensive property and floods.

iseenodust · 30/07/2013 12:40

Should clarify M62 going east from Wakefield quiet. Going west Wakefield to Manchester frequent nightmare.

iseenodust · 30/07/2013 12:45

Doesn't Snaith put you in catchment for Goole secondary? To be avoided.

aliny · 01/08/2013 20:48

Thanks isee, will look at south Hunsley.

The property in Snaith, said Snaith School was nearest? Will avoid Goole.

Is there a lot of flood areas, another thing to add to my list.

busybeev · 01/08/2013 21:12

Howden is a lovely village and the school is very good but its true that it doesn't have a sixth firm now although there is a sixth form and college in nearby goole .
Snaith has its own secondary school
. I wouldn't recommend Goole or surrounding villages if you want to avoid Goole high school. Hope that helps x

nettie · 01/08/2013 21:47

Isle of Axholme about 30mins from doncaster, various small towns/villages - Epworth, Haxey, Crowle are the main ones, two secondary schools, North Axholme in Crowle, South Axholme in Epworth.

MaryPoppinsBag · 02/08/2013 10:08

In no particular order Bawtry, Tickhill, Braithwell, Gringley on the Hill (small housing estate being built there) Misterton, Blyth, Oldcotes, Firbeck not north of Doncaster but all commutable.

I'd live in any of them if I could drag myself away from friends and family and very decent house prices in the pit town where I grew up.
