Large light fittings, but not too ££?

Pannacotta · 29/07/2013 08:47

I need to get a couple of new light fittings but am struggling to find anything big enough which isn't too expensive.
The rooms I need them for are large and have very high ceilings (over 3m) so anything too small looks mean and out of proportion - its an old Victorian house.

I am not mad keen on big round paper shades but that seems to be my only choice at the moment.

Any other thoughts/suggestions?

TIA

Ikea?

CreatureRetorts · 29/07/2013 08:51

What's your budget?

nancerama · 29/07/2013 08:52

What's your budget? I got some from Achica that I think we're about £50 each.

HappyAsASandboy · 29/07/2013 08:57

BHS has always had great light fittings at very reasonable prices.

Ikea have some, but I find them expensive for the quality and not such original designs (they look like ikea light fittings!).

Pannacotta · 29/07/2013 09:00

I could spend up to £100 each.
I have looked at IKEA but they are a bit modern.
That said, I do quite like the IKEA flower light here but think it might too modern/designer ish

My house is quirky and a bit ramshackle, modern and sleek is not happening!

I did look at BHS but the ones I liked were £200-300...

Somewhere like the lighting superstore has a lot of choice?

noddyholder · 29/07/2013 10:26

Do you want shades or actual ceiling fixed lights?

Pannacotta · 29/07/2013 11:10

I don't mind whether they are shades or fittings but I don't think fabric pendant shades are the look I am after, probably a bit too modern.
Will look at Lighting superstore.

What is the decor like colours etc?

nancerama · 29/07/2013 12:17

The ikea one is enormous. I live in a Victorian house with high ceilings, but it's only safe in the dining room over the table!

GleamingHeels · 29/07/2013 12:17

I have over 3m height ceilings, also a Victorian house with huge roses and cornices - my budget was way smaller than yours and I found mine in Harry Corry and Homebase between £15 and £25... obviously they're not authentic and are made of acrylic etc, but they look good!

nancerama · 29/07/2013 12:18

Loads of choice here www.pagazzi.com/

noddyholder · 29/07/2013 12:28

these look good if you have the height.

recall · 29/07/2013 12:37

or the ££££s Grin

nancerama · 29/07/2013 13:01

On budget www.pagazzi.com/dillo-5-light.html

Sleepwhenidie · 29/07/2013 13:29

We have these in our hallway, similar height to yours, 3 large ones hung separately then a small, medium and large one grouped together next to the front door, all different colours. I love them and we get lots of compliments on them. The shades and fittings for all of those came to about £200 iirc. Only trouble is I can't see whether you can get them delivered here from France, we bought ours when on holiday (driving). Or are they too modern for your decor?

look at shots with ceiling pendants

Pannacotta · 29/07/2013 13:38

Thanks all.
One room is F&B London Clay,

the other is Fired Earth Stone Ochre
www.firedearth.com/stone-ochre
Fairly classic decoration (unfinished though) and large ceiling roses which make it hard to add modern fittings.
Will check links later once DCs are not bothering me, thanks!

There's a website for a company called Trinity Marine that do really cool (and some very large) industrial chic fittings reclaimed from ships and the like. The prices are really pretty reasonable considering the size of some things - I ordered one of their pendant lights and even though it needs to have a sparky fit the electrics I thought it was a good deal. The style may not be to everyone's taste right enough but maybe worth checking out.

noddyholder · 29/07/2013 14:30

eriack i have the cargo lights in my study Beautiful!

allotmentgirl82 · 30/07/2013 17:36

we have a victorian house and have this light in our dining room over our table :www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/30089411/

Pannacotta · 31/07/2013 10:41

Thanks all.
I've looked through all the links but nothing I have seen has tickled me yet.
Sorry but am not too keen on the industrial type lights (at least not for this house) and the coloured globes are sweet but a bit modern.
I have had a look on ebay too but not much joy there either.

Perhaps I will just get some paper shades until I find something else...

I think budget chandeliers from bhs are your best bet - they are always having sales - sooner or later the ones you like will be in the sale! Smile

WeleaseWodger · 31/07/2013 11:13

How about this reduced from 170 to 42.50?

Personally, I don't like the gold but for that price, I'd just spray paint it.

WeleaseWodger · 31/07/2013 11:16

Also this, at 115. We had a similar one in our Victorian hallway and it looked great.
