Can I put trellis on top of 6ft fence without planning?

I know you need planning to erect a fence over 6m, but our neighbours both sides have put some trellis on top of their 6m fences to help with privacy/security. The ground is level both sides and there is a public footpath the other side of our garden.

I'm hoping we can do the same but might there be a problem with this? Does the trellis not count as "fence"?

I think that yes, technically, it is fence and would need pp if over 6'. However, if your neighbours on both sides have done it, I'd guess that no-one is likely to complain or report it!

I think it's ok as it's seen as temporary.

Hopeful bump for any more views?

According to what I've read in the planning application for a fence adjoining a house we are buying, trellis isn't fence.

Just reread the decision on the application and its not really clear, but it does treat trellis separately to fence because of the amount of light it lets through. Don't think that helps, does it. Sorry!

Given what I've read, in our LA they are concerned about a few things- light/overbearingness, does it fit with the area, and is it visible from the road. If your neighbours have already done the same then I would put it up, and if a complaint is made you could put in a retrospective application.

You could search and see what has happened with similar applications in your area.

Thanks, I think we will probably just take the risk and do it. If anyone does end up complaining (although I can't see who would), it would probably take 20 mins to take it down again! Would really help with security as the garden backs onto a public footpath.

6m?

19 ft?

That is a big fence.

PigletJohn · 24/07/2013 10:44

for security, some nice prickly rose will scramble up the fence and along the top, if you put vine eyes in the posts and run some galvanised wire to cling to.

TheRedRabbit · 25/07/2013 13:35

Ahem. Yes, obviously meant 6 ft there.

Thanks PigletJohn will keep that in mind.
