Knocking out under stairs cupboard

Just that really. My under stairs cupboard is big and a massive dumping ground for millions of useless items. The Hoover could easily fit upstairs in our airing cupboard.Coats and bags that should be put away or stored would be if we did nt just dump them. Then I could have a little study nook.Plus the hall would feel much more spacious.Anyone done it? Pros and cons appreciated

Personally I wouldn't give up an understairs cupboard. It's far too useful.

But as you want to, why not sort out the contents before committing to actually removing it, and see if you can find a suitable home for everything first.

Can you be sure you won't just shove same stuff in the space left under the stairs? We're renting at moment and our stairs are crying out for a cupboard, too small to be useful so dumping ground but a really obvious one. Wish I could shut it away!

Love our under the stairs cupboard for hiding all our bits but can how the idea of space would appeal.

I'm (hopefully) about to move to a house where most of under the stairs is open. It does make the hallway feel very open but I am wondering what we are going to do with the space. What I think will happen is that we will end up dumping bags and shoes there and it will look a big mess. I was wondering about putting some coat hooks up and having some low shelving for shoes.

OP, do you have somewhere else downstairs where people can hang coats? I don't think it's practical to expect them to be in bedrooms. What if they are wet?

We have a study hole under the stairs where the cupboard used to be. Was like that when we moved I. Makes it feel very spacious (compared to next door who have not had this done). No clutter under ours but I am a bit of a tidy freak. You will have to find different places for hoover and coats - I've never really solved this problem satisfactorily but wouldn't go back to how it originally was.

We got rid of ours and just kept a mini cupboard at the bottom (that went up to the height a desk would start). Would that be a better compromise?

My mum converted hers to an extra bathroom, tiny corner sink and a loo. She was fortunate that the cupboard already had a window.

No personal experience but...

Our current rented has no cupboard save a small bolt hole which literally has electric meter and junk, space is filled with shoes, buggy and coats- useful but not amazingly as would prefer to hide the items from view and buggy from fat lazy cat!

New house which we have bought has under stairs cupboard of sorts and a study hole / coat cubby area.

We will be using this for the dog and the coats!

However we viewed a house in the process of buying where the under stairs cupboard led to... A playroom! I wanted to buy it for the sheer novelty!

Just thought id share Grin

When I renovate I always knock it out to make a study area You can build in storage elsewhere
