We need to replace our old night storage heaters - are not on the gas main. Have looked at biomass but quotes coming in at £25,000 so not an option!! Are now looking at these thermostatic controlled radiators that work independently. Has anyone any experience of these or any ideas as to what other heating we can look at that is realistic in price? House is Victorian detached with thick blocked walls so no insulation possible - Thanks!!

Have you considered air source heat pump? There are various manufacturers & installers.
There are mixed views but bound to be cheaper to run than electric radiators.
There is a video here:

Electric rads are expensive to run but may be good to have a couple as back up, perhaps? B ut do you need to install expensive rads or would portable type be more convenient?
Also, why not have more night storage heaters?

because the the way they work, all electric heaters are 100% efficient.
(however energy losses during distribution and supply mean that electrical energy costs two or three times as much to buy as the equivalent amount of energy from gas)

You always put in x kWh of electricity which will always give out x amount of heat.

There are some clever marketing schemes who will try to persuade you that a £1,000 electric heater will give out more, or "higher quality" heat for your money that a £10 electric heater. It won't. However you can see the reasion why the people selling the things want you to buy them.

I have seen adverts suggesting that heaters made in Germany give out more heat than ones made in other countries, and adverts claiming that heaters made of Italian Aluminium will give out more heat for your money. Neither is true.

insulation, draughtproofing, timers and thermostats, if you use them, will improve economy and comfort, but there is no need to buy a £1,000 heater to get them.
