Open plan kitchen-diner.... And playroom?

Our new house has an extension across the entire back - kitchen is about 1/3, "morning room" is about 2/3 with a small doorway between them. The two reception rooms it leads off from are the dining room and playroom which are 50/50 (you get to the kitchen via the playeoom and the mirning room via the dining room). I'd like to knock though the kitchen and morning room and the playroom to create one big L-shaped room. An existing chimney breast would need to stay put.

My mum reckons we'll regret "open-planning" that much.

Thing is, whilst its good to have somewhere to put toys, it's difficult to get dd to stay in there whilst I'm in the kitchen, she drags all her toys out to whenever I am. I know this wont be the case forever but I think it would be a really nice bright and open family area.

Has anyone else open-planned their playroom and care to share experiences?!

I have a big basement kitchen-diner, so it effectively became a kitchen-diner-playroom when the kids were little, because no-one liked having kids and adults on separate floors... It was sometimes a bit of a nightmare, to be honest: falling over toys all the time; and worse, those heart-stopping moments when you trip over a toddler on your way to drain boiling pasta in the sink... Shock If you can keep some kind of separation, so that you can close a safety-gate but she can still see you, I reckon that'd be the best option... :)
