can anyone identify the wood used in window frames on front cover of grand design magazine?

Yes, it's pine, which is no good for window frames- it warps and rots quickly. They should have used a hardwood like mahogany or oak.

Looks like they must have money to burn so wonder why they'd have pine windows.

It's cheap softwood joinery and will need frequent painting and patching. In a few years it will be fit for the bonfiire and will need to be replaced with something suitable.

You surely aren't thinking of copying them?

I'm not really thinking of copying. I'm new to all this but I've just been asked whether I want to rebuild a rotting mini conservatory room hard or soft wood.

Could well be Douglas Fir, which is fine for windows.
