I want a whole wall covered in that smart boxy shelving like Hulsta, or even likethe more modern Neville Johnson designs. Has anyone got some that doesn't cost 10 K or so! I kid you not, hideous prices although the Hulsta quality is amazing.

I know a few people who have ikea expedit which looks pretty smart and is quite cheap.

Cheap as chips the expedit stuff & really versatile.

There are lots of 'expedit hacks' too, just google. IMO best ever product from ikea & I have only recently got it for DS room, (shelves are quite deep mind you)

Have you spoken to any local joiners, they may be able to do a most cost effective version. Ask for examples of work.
We've have had some beautiful shelves / cabinets built for two large alcoves in our living room for about £1k. From this I've ended up recommending the joiner to loads of people as everybody asks who made them.
I'm getting a contemporary version made for my new office ... However as the wall is 6m long I expect it might cost a tiny bit more Grin

I would try and use IKEA Expedit and adapt it if needed.
Look on Flickr or Pinterest for ideas.

We also got a Neville Johnson quote for £8k and was pretty worried the Ikea Expedit would look cheap, especially as we have wonky old walls.

Anyway, we got 2 tall units and cut to size to entirely cover the back wall in our entrance hall. We put the units on a timber frame with cupboard doors (invisable hinges and openers), all made by the builder. Although I now see they have a combination unit which would have worked too. www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/S59000965/

I'm a bit fussy DH would say VERY so we filled the teeny gaps between the units with builders calk and then painted over the whole thing with a sponge gloss roller and eggshell (when I say, we....). We also painted the wall behind a deep green so it shows through where there are no books or ornaments.

It did end up costing about £400, but I think it looks amazing.

You may also want to look at the Besta range. You can add doors and have different depths of shelves etc. I found it more flexible that Expedit as the small size of each square block in the Expedit range is a bit limiting. With Besta you can have larger cupboards and drawers, it basically works in multiple blocks of 60 or 120cm wide.
