Made to measure blackout blind like a Gro anywhere blind

I need 2x made to measure blackout blinds like a Gro anywhere blind - so basically just blackout material with a sucker at each corner.

Has anyone seen anything like this anywhere? Or should I just be making them myself?

must be dead easy to make yourself - dunelm have blackout material and probably suckers. you might need more than one sucker on each corner if it is big as the material is fairly heavy.

if you are feeling creative you could sew a little pretty material on one side/ the bottom to make it look a bit nicer.

UnicornsPooGlitter · 30/06/2013 13:31

I know poocatcher, I probably should just make them myself. I can't envisage how the sucker would be attached though.

Dunelm Mill is a good tip for blackout material, Ikea didn't seem to have any.

I meant to say, the windows are small, so I think that 1x sucker at each corner should be enough.

Window suction cups on amazon - some just have a hole through the nib which I guess you could sew through like a button. Some have a screw thread through which might be better.
I've also bought very good quality cheap blackout material through amazon.

Forget the suckers. Buy sticky back Velcro from dunelm and use tabs in corners and centre and bottom corners. Stick to window frame. Be careful taking it down though as doing it repeatedly weakens it. We roll it up and hook it under the window handle.
This is assuming of course it's for home and not travel :-)

UnicornsPooGlitter · 30/06/2013 14:40

Thanks wonky and Tidy, both good ideas Smile.

Yes Tidy, they're for at home. I think I can stand the faff of on / off twice a day.

I should have also offered that we got some extending curtain poles for ours and just made a simple blind. the poles are the type you can use for net curtains and just twist out to become the width of the window frame. we have no way of rolling up the blind so just hook it out the way, but you could come up with something better or take them down every day if you are not a short arse like me!

I made one that is a simple roll up blind on a tension rod. The top is just tucked over and sewed up and the tension rod slides inside. I sewed two ribbons to the top of the blind so an even amount of ribbon hangs over each side (prob 15com). At the bottom I sewed the bottom over and then cut a peice of bamboo cane to size and pushed that in. The bottom can then be easily rolled up and tied at the top with the ribbons. It works brilliantly as the blind is exactly the right size for the window and I can remove it easily and wash it.

Did anyone ever make their own blinds in the end?

I have some windows I'd like to cover but can't drill into the frames as we are renting.

Any tips? Thanks.

UnicornsPooGlitter · 01/05/2018 20:42

I did!

I used:
Blackout material from Dunelm Mill
Nice material from eBay
Pop together suction cups from eBay

I sewed the material together using my sewing machine, and cut a tiny hole for the suction cups, and sealed the edges using fray guard.

They're fab.

Thanks!

Do you mean something like this from ebay

20mm Thumb Tack Suction Cups Standard Plastic/Rubber Window Push Pin Suckers

UnicornsPooGlitter · 01/05/2018 21:19

Yes, that's the kind of thing I meant. I got ones that push together, but I think some screw together. I'll probably go for screw ones next time.

Thanks. I think I will give it a shot.

There is definitely a gap in the market for made to measure suction cup blackout curtains!

Blakout · 02/05/2018 09:42

These guys sell these ones:

www.easyblindsonline.co.uk/suction-cups

Do you think they would work?

I'm not sure which ones to get as I am worried about making a hole in the blackout and letting light in.

Can't find any big push through ones.

UnicornsPooGlitter · 02/05/2018 20:03

I was worried about making a hole too - I just used one of those stitch ripper tools, made a tiny hole, and applied some liquid fray guard stuff. It was completely fine.

OP posts:
UnicornsPooGlitter · 02/05/2018 20:04

And looking at the date of my original post, I made mine about 5 years ago, and they're still completely fine 😄.

OP posts:
Blakout · 03/05/2018 14:33

That's great. I think I will make one for one window pane and see how I get on before talking the rest.

Thanks!

Blakout · 11/05/2018 10:52

I actually ordered this material from Amazon in the end as it's only about £3.50 per meter:

www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01H2SY1UM/ref=as_li_ss_tl?psc=1&linkCode=ll1&linkId=228982fd95760890b84707a78b8de789&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8

It is pretty thin and light, at least compared to the Gro baby.

But it seems to do a good job of keeping out the light. But I've only done one window so far, so can't say for sure.

Have ordered some more to do the rest of the windows.

I just used the 3M Command velcro strips to hold it up. They work, but don't look great when the blinds are down.

www.amazon.co.uk/Command-Medium-Picture-Hanging-Strips/dp/B00OI6F67O/ref=as_li_ss_tl?linkCode=ll1&s=kitchen&linkId=224ff5ffba1c7981ea03869526f48fc5&keywords=3m+command+strips&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8&qid=1526032021&sr=1-2

I've ordered some of these suction cups so will see if I can attach them to the blinds:
www.amazon.co.uk/Strong-Suction-Transparent-Sucker-M4-WINGNUT/dp/B078ZP1NH2/ref=as_li_ss_tl?linkCode=ll1&s=diy&linkId=f522659f6f50980204b3ce38b3851edc&keywords=suction+cup+screw&th=1&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8&qid=1526031613&sr=1-2

Might need to get a grommet tool to stop the blind from tearing?

www.amazon.co.uk/Grommets-Pieces-Grommet-Clothes-Leather/dp/B0757LK8T5/ref=as_li_ss_tl?linkCode=ll1&s=diy&linkId=b8625a2da9083b6947ec599cf97fd05d&keywords=grommet+material+punch&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8&qid=1526031793&sr=1-4

I'll let you know how it turns out!
