Where to buy a 3 bed with 360K?

LostBuyer · 29/06/2013 20:08

Hi all,

I have been living in the UK for 5 years, renting, always in London. Now, the time to buy has come. Already got the approval from two lenders. The crucial question is where to buy? I intend spend up to 360K within 45 commuting time. I work mainly in the City with IT.

If any of you have done some home search recently, any suggestions of towns to live with family and child (primary school) with that budget, time? I know loads of property websites, but they don?t tell you if a given area/town is nice or bad.

Do you need to live within a walking distance to the local railway station to commute? How do you get to you station? I am completely lost on this. Any help, suggestion or details from your home search or commuting experience are very welcome!

Thanks in advance.

There are lots of places within the london sub urbs where you can get a 3 bed house for 360K or less.

If you want good links to London and good schools then you can't go wrong with Bushey.

If you venture further out to say Kings langley you would get more for your money

Or garston, but you have to be careful about secondary schools. Parmitars is a very selective school, otherwise you have the option of the St Michaels whichs is a catholic school or Francis Combe. Primary schools are mostly OK.

There are plenty of other places around london. You can look towards the south of london as well.

Talkinpeace · 29/06/2013 21:13

Most of the country you'll get that easily.
You need to draw your map.
Do you work, where do you work, how do you get there?
how old are your kids, can you be arsed with selective schools?

commuterville, good schools etc etc

bishboschone · 29/06/2013 21:21

I have a 3 bed for sale for exactly that amount. Commutable to London.

bishboschone · 29/06/2013 21:24

I'll pm you the link if you want as dont want to out myself . There people in my road commute to London and it has fantastic schools and a village . Much nicer than any of those houses linked to as well Wink

That house in Hampshire does look lovely. It is a lot further out than Bushey or Kings langley.

Obviously the further the OP is prepared to go out the more she will get for her money. I thought that the OP wanted a 45 minute commute from her front door to the centre of London. (Including walking time getting to the station as well as the train journey.)

If the OP does live further out then she will have to pay more on train fares.

The Fleet one? just a random town that I do work in, with a good train line
Here's another option

yes, the train will be dearer, but the life will be better

My DH commutes to London. We live in Peterborough which is 45 mins to Kings X on the train. You could buy a lot of house for that money here! Either a stunning 3 bed in a brilliant location or a much bigger house in places that are still nice. You'd just need to keep an eye on which secondary you were in catchment for.

Hitchin here, one of many north of London commuter towns. 10 minutes walk to the station, 25 minutes into Kings Cross on a fast train, and a lovely market town with good schools and very friendly people. Moved here just over a year ago and I absolutely love it.

I really like Farnham and this looks pretty, but £350k is pretty tight budget for the area, especially nicer bits
