Floorboards varnished or painted? Impractical for 'wet' areas? Cold for brekkie on winter mornings?

Avoiding vinyl due to DC with allergies but not keen on much else.

Suggestions anyone?

Large tiles.

Not cold? And break stuff when you drop things on them?

Stuff gets stuck in the grout?

Slippery in the bathroom?

What sort of underlay do they need (if any?)

Linoleum (best known brand Marmolium) is a sheet flooring like vinyl but is made from natural products rather than PVC. It's great environmentally and for allergies.
Wood wise - bamboo flooring is good in wet areas. It comes in a variety of finishes. Get samples though as it can can vary in quality.

We've got stone tiles. Yes, they are cold on my feet, equally they warm up when the sun shines one them. I wear socks. I have a steamer to clean them and they disguise dirt quite well. Honed stone, so not slippery. No underlay.

Equally have had wood in a bathroom and didn't find it any problem, just made sure not to leave water standing on it. I'd do varnished, rather than painted as painted floors seem to wear faster and are a pain to repaint IME.

Another vote for lino/marmoleum,
Natural product, warm underfoot and great for allergy suffererers. USed widely in NHS.

Have struggled to find marmoleum for sale anywhere. Not happy with the prices, I've seen but would love to have it for hall through to kitchen/diner as DC has allergies.

John Lewis stocks it and usually a local independent.
HAve you contacted FOrbo for stockists?
Its much less ££ than Amtico etc.

Love Marmoleum. It's about £26 per m2 from Forbo. They do a range specifically for areas that get wet.

Rubber is another natural alternative and good for wet areas - but I think maybe you need to order via an architect/builder now.

I'm very taken with poured resin at the moment - don't know if your ds would have allergies to that? It's beautiful but vv expensive.

We have Marmoleum. It's been down for over 10 years, and still looks as good as new.

Basketofchocolate · 03/07/2013 15:08

looks like Marmoleum is sold on Ebay even! Our JLewis don't do it.
