So tell me about Lymington

We're just about to move back to the UK after nearly 5 years abroad and are thinking of somewhere in the vicinity of Southampton (proximity to family, good transport links). DH works from home but needs to go to London/Winchester occasionally for meetings, and I'll be a sahm for at least a year and then may work at home too. On the list of possibles were Romsey & surrounding villages, Ashurst, and recently added to the list - Lymington. We're looking for smallish town/large village with reasonable amenities but good proximity to coast/forest/outdoor stuff. Preferably somewhere pretty to compensate for leaving the beauty spot we're currently in. I've heard traffic can be a nightmare, but as we're not commuting would it really be that bad? I'm assuming we could work around main busy periods and if weekends are busy we'd probably just stay put in the local area. Kids are 0 and 2 so primary schools are consideration, 2ndry not so much other than house re-sale. I've heard some negative comments about Pennington but not sure why - can anyone tell me what is bad about that area? Also, if it is best avoided, where does Lymington end and Pennington begin? And does the comments about Pennington include Upper Pennington or is that considered distinct? What about Everton? Those two places you seem to get more for your money. Any general advice on places to look or avoid would be great.

Lymington is a great place to live. It used to have a reputation for being full of pensioners but is a much younger place than it used to be.

I think south of the high street tends to be the more expensive area. Only a small part of Pennington has a bad reputation (it will be the part where the properties seem cheaper) but I am not sure how bad it actually is in the grand scheme of things. So I wouldn't rule out it out. I think Everton's OK but I am not sure if there is much there (never been there). Boldre and Pilley are nice too if you want to feel like you are living more in the country, ponies roaming around etc.

Traffic is fine if you are not commuting and it only gets really busy in and out of town in the main summer holidays due to tourists. High street has some nice original shops and a market on Saturday.

Sailing is a big thing there and there are two sailing clubs at the Quay. There are some really nice old pubs around the town too. You can also go on lovely walks around the sea wall.

I think there are quite a few things going on for babies and toddlers there now and there are good primary schools in Lymington and Pennington and a good secondary school. There are some really lovely play parks around the town too.

My parents live near there in Brockenhurst. It's a really nice small town. The quay is a bit touristy but he high street is good. Shops aimed at weekenders with money. Nice restaurants and pubs. They are about to get Pizza Express. The main supermarket is Waitrose. You may need to drive to edge of Southampton or New Milton for cheaper big supermarkets. I've got friends there with kids who are happy. The train service is better from Brockenhurst as its on main line. Lymington is a shuttle train to Brock. Pennington is where the leisure centre is and secondary school.
You could look at Milford on Sea as well.

If I could afford to live in Lymington I would. I know it well.

I would move to that area in a heartbeat. Brockenhurst, sway, Lymington but not the main high street. I've spent millions in imaginary lottery money there!

Great, thanks for the feedback. Can't wait to get over there and take a look. I'll have a look at Sway too. Are there any parts of Lymington to be avoided or is it all nice? I've noticed properties on the north side of town seem less expensive.
