Opinion on kitchen's food serving hatch?

I am torn between two houses. Both have the same floorplan, i.e. kitchen in front of the house and living/dining room at the back. One of the houses has a kitchen hatch that is as wide as the kitchen with a counter top and kitchen cupboards above eye level. Another house has had the hatch and wall removed and it is all open plan.
My initial idea was to buy open plan and install a wall of sliding/folding doors between dining/living area, so I have [sort of] kitchen/diner and living space.
I thought I will hate the layout with the hatch, but noticed that the counter can serve as a table (seated from both sides), and the wall under the counter and above gives extra space for storage.
But obviously then it is not sensible to separate lounge/dining. All spaces are fairly small... typical 60s house!

We are family of 4. I have never lived open plan before. I need to choose one of those houses as I have got to move. TIA for advice!

Oh, I'd pick the one with the hatch. I know exactly what you mean as friends had houses like that when I was a child. Dead practical.

SwedishEdith thanks! I just had an offer accepted on the open plan house. It was about 10k lower than the "hatch" house. I hope with slidings doors installed I will not come to regret it!

Oh, well done! You could build a lovely hatch with £10k Wink
