Durable white satin or Matt paint for skirting etc?

Hello, we need to paint all our skirting boards/ picture rails/ door frames which are looking really very shabby, first off I am going to strip them all right back using Kling strip or something like that so I hope to get a really nice finish. Just wondering which paint to go for? I want something durable that won't yellow and is easy to apply in a satin or Matt finish if possible. ( I hate gloss) it's going to be a HUGE job, I need to get this right, please help!!!

We've done all of ours and I am in no hurry to repeat.

Stripped them off with a heat gun.

a coat of undercoat

then 2 thin coats of white eggshell - which, the top tip by my builder was to keep it watery with a splash of white spirit.

We used white eggshell from homebase for our entire flat. We first rubbed down with a medium grit sandpaper to key the surface and get rid of major imperfections. This is fine rather than stripping totally, and prevents the need for undercoat. We then sugar soaped before painting two coats of eggshell. The homebase stuff was absolutely fine quality-wise.

There was A LOT of wood and like Furball I'd care not to repeat!

We've just had ours whole hallway & stairs done and the decorators used dulux trade undercoat, underneath dulux trade high gloss and the finish is brilliant.
The decorators said they'd only just started using the stuff but it gave such a great finish they would always use it from now on.

I've just painted quite a few internal doors with Dulux trade Satinwood, it is solvent based and was very easy to work with and gave a good satin finish.

I much prefer eggshell to gloss, you can wash the brushes, it doesnt smell, it dries quicker, doesnt yellow. My decorator uses Wickes trade white.

Wilkinsons one-coat Crushed Almond satin finish. Water based, dries quickly, goes on well. And cheap!

why do you need to strip off the old paint? how thick/old is it?

sanding will usually do. If you look at the price of new skirting, stripping is probably not economic.

satinwood will be better than eggshell, which gets grubbier and doesn't clean well.

Thank you for your replies! I just assumed I would need to as the decorators previously have just painted straight over (what looks like a dark stain/ varnish) and it is all chipping off very badly. Perhaps they just didn't key the wood properly in preparation? I just want it to last this time!!!!

Ah.

Paint over varnish does not work well.

How old is it?

See if it will sand off (very dusty).

It's a 1930s house Piglet. All the woodwork needs doing gradually. Skirting, door frames, picture rails, archway surround... Gulp. Just want to make sure I get it right! Wink
