how big do you expect the garden to be with a 4 bed family home?

How big is your garden?
How big do you want it to be?
Is 9 metres (about 28 feet) from the back door to the back fence big enough?

Depends where you are. Round my way there are lots of 4 and 5 bed houses with gardens that size or even smaller and they sell like hot cakes, but then we are in fairly central London so people's expectations for gardens are lower. in the suburbs or country I suspect people would be put off by that size garden.

Ours is a little bit smaller than that and it was definitely our big compromise with this house. However we do live next door to a park.

We're in London.

We had similar length (urban) but it was double fronted with garage on corner plot so didn't feel closed in . Wall of house behind was only a few feet from our back hedge though. If that had also been on both sides I think it would have felt quite claustrophobic. Current 4 bed (semi rural)has 200ft of garden but narrower plot !

Yep, another Londoner living in pocket-handkerchief land. Whether 9m is big or small really depends on what the rest of the gardens are like in the neighbourhood.

When I look out my back window there is open space for 50 feet and more garden beyond that. It seems about right for our family so I am wondering if a garden less than 30 feet is to small. And would put off future buyers. I think on new housing developments the gardens are always small, aren't they?

Ours is tiny. But we live somewhere with masses of outdoor space so decided to buy the house anyway.

New builds always have pokey gardens. One of the reasons I'd never buy one.

LadyKooKoo · 13/06/2013 22:04

Ours is 129 feet. We went for the house because of it.

modern newbuild 4 bed house? Try a postage stamp garden, honestly, maybe 6 m x 4m? At most.

wonkylegs · 13/06/2013 22:57

Our 5 bed Edwardian terrace just has a small back yard and postage stamp sized front lawn. (3 x width of house).
Loads of families, nice city location, but close to park.
We are in the process of buying a house where the rear boundary is approx 250m from the rear of the house. I expect this will be a bit of a culture shock to is.

I think thats probably acceptable for London, very city centre in the regions. Elsewhere, that would limit the saleability of the property I'd expect. The open aspect beyond the garden might limit the impact of the small gardent though.

We have a garden thats 45-50ft (slightly sloping) for a 3 bed house that we're converting to a 4 bed house. I think the garden will be slightly small for a 4 bed house, but hopefully won't limit the market if and when we come to sell eventually.

We have a 25ftx35ft garden on a 3 double bedroomed house.. bit small, but no work to do ... standard 70s estate type house
