Can you convert a recessed light fitting into a pendant or spotlight?

In the kids' rooms they have just two recessed lights in each room. It makes for a dark room in the evening. I was hoping to replace each fitting to perhaps a set of spotlights or a nice fitting with a number of bulbs. Can this be done? Is it just a case of wiring the new fitting up and presumably this new fitting will cover the hole adequately? Thank you :)

do you mean there are downlighters? downlighters are good for creating a puddle of light in a dark room.

Spotights are good for creating a spot of light. So if you want to illuminate a statuette, or a small painting, or an actor in the centre of a dark stage, they're just the job.

If you actually want to light the room, all over, evenly, and to be able to read without taking your book to the lamp, a ceiling luminaire is what you need. A pendant with a lampshade is very suitable. Or some kind of half-globe fixed to the ceiling. Or some standard lamps or table lamps. Or a combination of several, switched on or off according to need.

For some reason, lighting fittings that don't illuminate the room are considered more fashionable than lamps that do.
