Would it look odd to have different kitchen worktops?

I'm just planning a new kitchen and have read all of the useful advice re: wooden work tops. However - I really think a wooden worktop will look good with the kitchen I have in mind and work well with the rest of the colours - however I am very mindful that we are a busy family etc so I can't be bothered with the upkeep around the sink area. I could manage a yearly sand and oil on the rest of it.

I was thinking that I could have a separate worktop for the end where the sink goes - kitchen is U shape with window and sink at the end of the room. I was thinking maybe a cream coloured marble or granite/quartz.

Would that look odd? Or not? I can't decide.

Kitchen is about this size but a bit longer to give you an idea of the size of the room and layout

Yes, sorry, I think it would. But if you're ok with it then still consider it.

I have seen loads of kitchens with wooden worktops but with granite in the sink area. I think it looks really nice Smile

My last two kitchens had different worktops in different areas , one granite round sink and wood elsewhere , like you , the other corian round sink and stainless steel elsewhere . IMHO they both looked fab Grin

ChunkyPickle · 10/06/2013 14:20

I had wood one side and stainless on the sink side - I think it looked fine.

Parents have melamine round most of the kitchen, but granite next to the cooker, also looks fine.

Don't see a problem, it's practical I think.

I have wood on most of the work tops & granite on the island, it was suggested by the kitchen designer.
I think it looks quite good. Less clinical.
But, I wouldn't have wood again. The endless oiling & black bits by the sink are too much.

didireallysaythat · 10/06/2013 17:18

I'm the one person on the planet who doesn't get the mumsnet black bits by the sink. Jung oil once a year. Or that diamond hard varnish (but you can't undo varnish)....

But I'm the outlier here I know....

I have leathered granite (not shiny, slightly textured) along the wall with the sink on it, then oak along the other wall and on the island. I like the contrast between the two. I had originally planned to have granite all the way round and am so glad I didn't, as it would have been too much. I also have different coloured painted units - green in the cooking/preparation area and grey in the 'eating' end of the kitchen.

I have had wood round the sink in the past and would never do it again, but the wood in the rest of the kitchen is really easy to look after, I don't sand, just oil every so often.

We are planning a new kitchen and are having granite on the island where the sink is going and wood everywhere else. We're also mixing it up by having different coloured cabinets (probably oak and white) in different places... Eek

Ooh thanks everyone - how do you think I should work it in the U shape linked above? Granite the full width of the kitchen or wood the full length?

neatfreak - I too was tempted by different coloured units for wall and base units.

I also have 2 different surfaces
L shaped kitchen, black honed granite on sink side and iroko on other
I like it

MadeleineBassett · 11/06/2013 10:03

If you don't have a unit coming down on to the worktop (as at the left hand side in your picture) , I think I would have the granite across the full width , to "square" the kitchen off. If it is long and narrow I think wood straight down on both sides might emphasise the length .

JazzAnnNonMouse · 11/06/2013 10:13

I think it might look a bit weird

Daisytunes · 11/06/2013 10:20

Can we have some pics of these multi-coloured kitchens?

QueenBoudicea · 11/06/2013 10:49

That's what I was thinking MadeleineBassett - kitchen is 2 1/2m wide x 6m long so having the granite all the way across would make it feel wider.

Lots of pics on houzz - will see what I can find Daisytunes
