We've booked the removal company to pack for us . What state should we have the house in to make it as easy as possible for them? Obviously tidy, but do I need to pack anything at all? I We did it myself ourselves last time still have mental scars so I haven't a clue and I have to be ready by the end of tomorrow!!

Ok now I'm really annoyed with the iPhone app as it no longer does the strike through thingy. Grr.

No, you don't have to do anything.

You might want to pack some personal items - jewellery or your knicker drawer, but you don't have to.

5 hours seems rather optimistic unless you are very minimalistic in your decor

alienbanana · 08/06/2013 23:19

Personally I would pack overnight bags for everyone so you can lay your hands on essentials, and stick it all in the back of the car.

But anything else? No.

BimbaBirba · 08/06/2013 23:21

What about taking down curtain poles, shelves, hooks, etc (if you want to take them)? And filling the holes?
I think when the tim comes I'll,go around the house trying to declutter and throw away stuff that I haven't used for a while to avoid carrying over the junk

superlambanana · 08/06/2013 23:25

We've done a lot of decluttering and will probably spend most of tomorrow between home and the local tip getting rid of it all! The spare room only has a bed and two small cabinets, and the third bedroom has two desks with contents and a book case, so it's not like we're bursting at the seams - hoping it will be okay. My nerves won't take any more going wrong!!

I will take down curtains etc - good idea. It just feels wrong to not do anything at all - I'm stressing that moving day will come and I'll have forgotten something major! And I can't even be there to check as I'm away and DH is overseeing it all!

It will be fine. I wouldn't bother taking down curtains - they will do it all. Bring them bacon rolls and donuts.

Yes, take some essentials in a bag.

And pack a box with tea bags, sugar, couple of mugs and the kettle - get them to put that in the van last so first out at the new house.

And some choc biscuits.

BillComptonstrousers · 08/06/2013 23:28

Nothing! Unless you want to! They even packed up the dirty plates we had used that morning to put their bacon sandwiches on.

superlambanana · 09/06/2013 00:40

Wow, that does sound good... Will they actually get it packed and loaded in five hours?!

Make sure to put your bin bags out or they will pack and move those too.

valiumredhead · 09/06/2013 01:55

You will be amazed at how quickly they pack up!

Make sure everything is down from the attic, disconnect any electricals e.g computer, unplug cables from tv etc. Take down curtains & any light fittings you are taking.
Definitely pack an overnight bag, even bedding for everyone as you then know a) where it is and b) it's clean to go straight onto beds when you crash exhausted. You might want a takeaway menu too to treat yourselves, moving even without packing is stressful!

SamsGoldilocks · 09/06/2013 08:50

Make sure you know where your passports mortgage documents, buildings insurance are.

Pack an bag with toiletries, sheets for bed, knickers

Make sure you have some cleaning products and binbags at hand in case the new place is not as clean as you'd like.

Think about labelling your furniture so movers can put it in the right room when you get there without having to ask you everytime.

valiumredhead · 09/06/2013 14:36

Our packers got everything down from the loft and unplugged everything.

valiumredhead · 09/06/2013 14:37

Also took down curtains, they did everything, they were fab!

CMOTDibbler · 09/06/2013 14:44

Last move, we had a three bed that was stuffed to the gunnels, and we packed nothing but overnight bags and minimal eating equipment. My knicker drawer, they took the whole drawer out, covered it in paper and put it in the lorry like that.

In 5 hours we were packed and loaded, and that move the big lorry couldn't be parked outside so they had to use a van and shuttle it.
