Packing + removal costs?

We're moving from a 2 bed house to a nearby 3 bed house, but we've been quoted over £1k for packing + removal. This seems quite steep! We're in the north east.

Does this seem reasonable?

Get at least 3 quotes. I found recently in looking for a removal company that there can be a big, big variation. I actually got 5 quotes. The most expensive was for basic removal (no packing) from a 3 bed into storage then on to the new house was £1500. The best quote (which I went with) was £585 for the same. With packing it will be about £700. pack. The other three were somewhere in between that.

Just had one quote in Surrey to move a small 3 bed house 50 miles away and it was £1088 without packing (think packing was £120 more)

loler · 05/06/2013 16:17

Seems expensive to me - get another quote from a smaller local company. The national company that quoted us was over twice the price of a small company.

wonkylegs · 05/06/2013 16:28

Seems steep to me - we're in the NE.

Our quotes for a 5bed house Inc Piano, moving 50miles and dismantling /reassembling beds have ranged from £850 ( Ashington removals) to £1900 (Pickfords).

Packing wouldn't add much to that but I want to do it myself so I can throw out all our accumulated junk Blush and not take it with us.

The cheapest one also got a recommendation from a friend as being good.

Sounds bargaintastic to me - see my earlier thread on the subject...but I am in London so to be expected that I am to be fleeced!

We've just been quoted £295 moving locally from 2 bed to 3 bed. But we're not moving any wardrobes or white goods, and it's without packing or packing materials. We're in the North West/Mids. £1k does sound steep so maybe get a few quotes. Do you know anyone who's moved recently who could recommend somebody?

ItsAllTLAsToMe · 05/06/2013 19:31

Right, thanks everyone, so it does seem a bit steep. I really wanted to use the company as we moved with them a few years ago and had no problems.

I tried to get someone to come round from one of the national companies, but although they have capacity to carry out the move, they have no-one to come round to check volumes etc Grin. I might try again tomorrow with their local phone number.

I also got a recommendation from a friend, so I'll try them tomorrow.

And I'll look at the 'extras' from the original quote - a lot of them seem unnecessary, eg late key blah blah (we're completing a few days earlier) etc.

Does anyone know about insurance though - both of my current insurance companies assure me that my contents will be covered by them during transit, as long as they're packed and moved by a professional removal company. Is this true? Do Si not need the optional extra removal company insurance then?

Si = I, bloody phone.

Huh, I never thought about asking my current insurance to cover it because I intend to cancel the insurance when we move (since we have a two month gap).

The standard terms of the movers terms and conditions usually say that the company only has to pay £40 or £50 per missing/damaged item UNLESS you take out the additional insurance. So I took it-reckoned it was worth £40 coverage. Maybe just doublecheck with your insurers as to the value they would pay?

wonkylegs · 05/06/2013 20:13

The cheapest quote(see previous post) we had covered £25K of insurance and the next highest covered £55K of insurance. There was no single item limit on either and we didn't have to use them to pack.

ItsAllTLAsToMe · 05/06/2013 20:17

I talked to both of them Erlack, they just said Oh yes, all of your contents are covered moving to / from your property, so I assume it's the same cover as we have now IYKWIM. Obvious differences I noticed are: removal company £50 excess (good), removal company not-new-for-old (bad).

I use rapid transport in Newcastle. They have moved us three times in the last two years and have always been brilliant. They take beds apart and put them back up etc. They moved us locally in durham (about ten miles) 3 bed to 3 bed which was about £750. Then they moved us to London, then back from London which was obviously a lot more but didn't mind paying as they are great. On the local move, they came at 8am packed the house and garage, drive to new house, unpacked, and were done by 5pm Grin

ItsAllTLAsToMe · 05/06/2013 20:43

Yes, I want one of those one day jobbies Bill Smile.

Well give Andy a ring, they are great lads, there are normally 3 of them and they work like bloody Trojans Grin I recommend them to everyone!
