Non-naff way of distinguishing my gate from the road (in addition to a sign)

Angry I am sure I posted about this before but may have been in chat. Have name changed as think this may out me.

I live in a house with a name in an un-marked lane.
Let's call it "Hazeldene"
Attached to my house are cottages which are called 1 and 2 Hazeldene Cottages

Our neighbours at 1 were here before us and have an arbour style gate way. Above which there is a big sign which says "HAZELDENE" and then a tiny number 1 on their low-down 3 foot gate.

So a lot of our deliveries etc end up going to them as they are closer to the road than us.

But OMG this is driving me spare.

My DH has asked them twice to remove the sign but they won't haven't

So today, when I was expecting an important delivery, I put a balloon outside my gate to make it clear where to go.

We are set back a bit further and the house isn't visible from the road (one of the reasons we like the house!) We have a parking area out the front and a tall pedestrian gate (door sized) with our house name on it.

Can you think of any way I can distinguish the gate?
(apart from the ruddy big sign!)
TIA

Would you consider changing the name altogether? Or are you particularly attached to the house name?

I used to live on an estate where all the road names started with the same bit ie Apple Close, Apple Court, Apple Lane, Apple Street. All I could think was that someone lacked imagination Grin

NumTumDeDum · 04/06/2013 21:32

If they won't take the Hazeldene sign down, would they consider getting a bigger number 1? This would annoy me no end as well.

MustangRose · 04/06/2013 21:52

I don't even like the name "hazeldene" that much -
We looked into it but changing the name via the postal service costs in the region of EIGHT HUNDRED QUID!

Glad to hear it would irk others - I was beginning to think I was being totally unreasonable

Presuming you're in England/Wales, it's the local council you need to speak to regarding changing your address, it's not up to Royal Mail. There may be a charge but for a straightforward name change it's most likely to be around £50

DownsizeAbbi · 05/06/2013 09:18

Is there a wall near no.1 where you could fix a sign close to no.1 which says HAZELDENE ---> .
I sometimes see similar signs where a house on the corner which is officially eg 23 X road , but the front door is actually round the corner in Y road. Or wold your neighbours allow you to put one on their fence so that the postman saw the sign at the same time as theirs.
Probably haven't explained that too well.

senua · 05/06/2013 09:32

Can you put a sign where the unmarked lane comes off the main road? A sign for "Hazeldene, No1 Hazeldene Cottage, No2 HC" will alert people to the fact that there are three properties there.

You're always going to be in a bit of a difficult position if people can't see that your house is there. I'd guess that they don't realise that your gate exists / leads to a house.

(I've realised that quite a lot of people literally walk straight past our gate, presumably mistaking it for a bit of fence, and do a long loop around to an arbour style archway instead.)

Have you said that you'd pay for your neighbours' replacement signs, and to do the job of taking down the existing one and putting up the new one? Presumably you want them to have one that says '1 Hazeldene Cottage'.

I can't imagine that they want to take all your deliveries in for you, so I'd guess that there's some specific thing that isnt working for them in your current suggestion.

Alternatively, how about one of those large wooden signs that hang sideways, the sort that guest houses sometimes have? That would be quite conspicuous.

DownsizeAbbi · 05/06/2013 09:53

Senua has said much better than I the sort of thing I was thinking of !

DoingItForMyself · 05/06/2013 09:55

Can you just change the name of your house?!

DoingItForMyself · 05/06/2013 09:56

£800 Shock are you sure? I changed the name of a property I lived in for nothing.

trice · 05/06/2013 10:22

I changed my house name. I didn't pay anyone anything. Where does £800 come into it?

PigletJohn · 05/06/2013 12:40

I wonder if you could have large gateposts, painted bright white to catch the eye, as well as a large hanging sign?

a hanging sign (like a B&B sign) is much more prominent that a number on a gatepost.
