Please tell me about F&B 'String'

Good/bad experiences? What colours/schemes does it work/not work with? What F&B white have you used with it for ceilings and woodwork? How does it read in different lights? Seems to range from looking cottagey and yellow and quite sophisticated neutral-with-a-hint-of-green...

Need a warm classic beige-cream to do the whole house in. Want something that will work with almost any colour furnishings and be neutral but not too beige-rental boxy. I'm envisaging something that blends into the background but also does its own thing enough to provide some interest. Needs to work with oatmealy carpet and old pine furniture.

I think it was too yellowy for me in my hall. I painted a console table in it and had clunch on the walls. Also too yellowy in hindsight but when it was in my garden when I was painting it in the bright light I loved the colour.

I fancy some Elephant's Breath in my new place and Little Greene Paint Co's Slaked Lime for the same reasons - nice neutrals with antiques!

French Grey from Little Greene paint co is a nice neutral with oatmeal too. Like a warm greige though, not creamy.

I have it for the hall and landing - love it as I have dark furniture and dark wooden flooring. I agree it would look yellow next to pine furniture. I have white skirting/doors and it looks great.

Have you thought about using Bone - have it in the kitchen and I love it.

I've used Joa's White and would say it matches the description of what you're after.

pickledsiblings · 03/06/2013 23:48

We have string in our living room and it is lovely although quite dark even with pointing/slipper satin woodwork. Bone I think is paler.

I wouldn't do a whole house in String. We had a room in it, it's a nice colour, lots of character but too much of it and you will feel like your life has been dipped in tea. I'd go a couple of shades lighter.

LittleFrieda · 04/06/2013 17:17

String can be a bit depressing. Joa's White is lovely as is Matchstick.

We have string in a dark-ish hallway and it is quite dingy-looking. We're going to paint over it with something more cheerful.

Ooh thank you. Hadn't realised I'd had any replies!

I really want to do whole house in one colour. It's fairly small and I really like the continuity of one colour in small houses. Plus I think multiple decisions would drive me to a nervous breakdown.

I like warm cosy traditional colours, hence going for string, but seems really hard to find something that's warm enough to complement pine furniture, without it being so dark and warm it's virtually the same colour as the bloody furniture! Matchstick looks promising though....Have had Dulux Jasmine White for years and it's nice and easy versatile, but....DULL! Want the elusive combo of something classic and traditional, but with some oomph.

our sitting room was painted in "String" by the previous owners
i hate it
"Nicotine" would be more accurate.

Pointing is a really nice warm white that looks good with other whites like slipper satin. Why don't you choose a palette of a few whites that work together to give a warm effect. You can then inject colour with soft furnishings.

LittleFrieda · 06/06/2013 09:51

Our hall stairs and landing and playroom and family room are all painted in Matchstick with Pointing woodwork. We love it.
