Tonbridge residents I need you

The family and I (dd 18 months) are planning to beat a retreat from our beloved east London shoe box this summer and move to Tonbridge. Can any Tonbridge residents give us any insight into schools and areas? We've been told we need to get as near as dammit to our preferred primaries as competition is fierce. I have also been warned against moving too near to St. Stephens, Cage Green Primary, the Longmead area and around Lavender Hill. Is that fair advice? Our budget is around 270k and we need 3 beds. I always take these reputations with a pinch of salt as I have lived in a supposedly rough area of London very happily for six years, so hope I haven't offended anyone with this! Any help would be so useful as we plan this massive leap into the unknown.

I really can't comment on primary schools. Although, I have a friend who works as a TA at Sussex Road, and says it is a wonderful school (I think a Good Ofsted score). We chose South Tonbridge because my daughter goes to Weald, and the first choice for my son is The Hayesbrook Academy.

We did look at houses in North Tonbridge (and in fact, offered on one on Hadlow Road, but the survey turned up a multitude of problems), but our personal circumstances meant South was a better fit.

We love South Tonbridge. After an initial "lay of the land", we focused our search around houses on both sides of Pembury Road. These houses had larger gardens than the ones that we saw to the north of the station. We can walk to the station, to Sainsbury's and to town so easily.

We don't hear any noise from the bypass. I will say though, as we are so close to the station, and parking is unrestricted on our street, that parking is an issue. We have a drive (for one car only), but for friends to come and visit during the day, it becomes an issue. In advance, I will park outside our house and let my friend(s) park in the drive to avoid them driving for hours (slight exaggeration!) to find a space.

The nicest road in South Tonbridge (as told to me by the EA, and not where I live!) is The Drive. But any homes in this area are lovely, I think. But I am now biased!

Mrsdoubleskulls, Thanks for your detailed reply - very helpful. I am liking the sound of South Tonbridge. Would you say that offstreet parking is a must? It does sound like a nice to have.

The Drive is a lovely looking road (albeit out of our budget). Out of interest - which is your road? Also can you recommend a good EA? I have heard of some charging sellers commission to the buyer.

We plan to head out there soon for another recce.

Cheers!

We have decided to move to South Tonbridge near the Drive and wondering if there are any good private or state schools within walking distance? We love the area but bit concerned about some stories I ve heard about racism related issues in Kent. Can anyone comment about Tonbridge in that aspect?
