Is it me or has this 'restoration' completely killed this house?

Now this is on a street of stunning Georgian houses and clearly a lot of time (and by the price tag - money) has been spent here BUT from the photos it just seems utterly, utterly souless. Like a new build not something 200 years plus.

I much prefer interiors where things have come together over time, even if some of the bits and bobs are a bit Hmm than ones that look as if someone has bought the lot in one shopping session.

Yes, so do I. I still don't like DC's house though :)

TunipTheVegedude · 31/05/2013 15:26

The Cruikshank one is wonderful. It feels authentic to him yet sparks the imagination about what it was like when it was built.

haggisaggis · 31/05/2013 15:29

What are the strange bits of wood for in bedroom 4 (first house)??

Brillig · 31/05/2013 15:39

How weird, I just opened today's Times and the property section has that Masham house in it. The owner says it was flats when she bought it and they didn't realise how ancient it was until they started 'peeling back the 70's decor and ripping out walls' SadAngry.

It also says that SPAB, English Heritage and others held up the building process and forced her to scrap some plans completely. 'We weren't looking to do anything outlandish'.

The whole thing cost £230,000 apparently

Hmm
SoupDragon · 31/05/2013 15:55

Haggis, they are, I imagine, roof supports as it's in the attic conversion. Odd choice to leave them exposed given the decor in the rest of the house.

TunipTheVegedude · 31/05/2013 15:58

Does it say if they have actually lived there, Brillig, or did they buy it to wreck do up?

If the latter, I curse them. We would have bought a nice old house in Masham (for a little bit less than that slightly over-the-top price for a house with no garden).

JenaiMorris · 31/05/2013 15:59

My house is full of crap incidentally, most of which would be binned if my Lotto numbers came up.

The fact that it has been collected over time is a bit irrelevant if pretty much all of it is crap Grin

Some of Dan's house looks a bit contrived though. It's been interior decored, hasn't it - it's not just come together.

SoupDragon · 31/05/2013 16:12

I am gradually replacing my Ikea identikit furniture with stuff from a charity house clearance place. Thus it is full of other people's crap :o

JenaiMorris · 31/05/2013 16:49

It's Euromillions tonight....

Quodlibet · 31/05/2013 19:02

I notice Dan Cruishank still installed some rather unGeorgian GCH. I wonder if he agonised over that as well?

Quangle · 31/05/2013 19:17

I live in a late Georgian house which I had completely renovated - every original feature had already been stripped out. I also have recessed spotlights - for the very good reason that on every floor apart from the first floor, the ceilings are so low you couldn't have any other sort!

My basement kitchen has literally milimetres more headheight than my fridge! I think people were smaller then Grin

Brillig · 03/06/2013 10:32

Oops, late getting back to this and it's probably a dead thread by now but Tunip, iirc they bought the Masham house specifically to do it up. I don't think they ever intended to live in it.

Re. Dan C's house - we're talking about stripping the soul and character from lovely old buildings; I personally wouldn't expect people to deny themselves central heating or bathrooms. You have to live as best you can in the house and yes, it is a compromise. But at least he worked with the fabric of the building and respected it, far more than with eg the Masham house, or the one in the OP...

TunipTheVegedude · 03/06/2013 22:07

Thanks Brillig.

What a pity! If they had had 10 happy years living in it, the destruction would have been a little bit worthwhile. Wrecking a house just to make money out of it is a shame, though.

Devora · 03/06/2013 22:27

God, I hate recessed spotlights. Work of the devil.

And ensuite bathrooms.

And acres of shiny marble (in bathrooms or kitchens).

Not mad keen on kitchen islands, either.

Would love to own a Georgian townhouse in York, though.

JenaiMorris · 04/06/2013 17:14

There's a place for recessed spotlights (even in a Georgian home - see Quangle Wink but they look so wrong in that post I made upthread.

I absolutely want a Georgian town house in Bath, as long as I can find one that hasn't been blinged to within an inch of its life. And I win the Lotto of course Grin

OrmirianResurgam · 04/06/2013 17:18

Oh dear. that is a bit of a shame.
