Staircases. Easy to change?

I wonder if anyone can tell me if its easy to literally just swop one staircase to another style? Would I need any official permission for this? expensive?

At the moment our doer-upper has a typical 70's stair case, similar to these:

Mine though are in a really horrific brown!

The house is a 70's build would you change the stairs or try to pretty up these 'original' ones?

They need to comply with building regs for safety. Gaps must be small enough to make sure a kid can't get stuck and banisters need to be high enough to not fall over. Google building regs & stairs.

Seen by my Canadianized eyes, the first picture is really inappropriate for anything except a rustic cabin out in the woods.

You are not replacing the staircase, just the bannister and balusters. Shouldn't be a problem, though as Wonky said, check the building regulations.

You're lucky, I have to get ,my staircase twisted around 180 degrees, such a pain...I keep putting of the rip down to the council offices to find out more...
