Rewiring a 2 bed Victorian terrace - how much disruption?

We're buying a house that needs a full rewire. Assuming this means floorboards up, plaster cut into, etc?

Should we aim to sort it before moving our furniture in? (Currently in storage)

The last electrician who did work for us created hardly any mess. The cables were all drilled through to the wall cavities and run under the floor. But it's still enough distruption that it's worth doing before you move in.

Did it take long? And was there much redecoration needed after?

He did a full rewire of the kitchen and new sockets and light switches in three rooms. Apart from the kitchen, which was being refitted, there was just small amounts of filling and painting.

It took a couple of days. Electricians prefer to work in empty houses because it's quicker and easier for them.

It's not terribly disruptive but they tend to spend a lot of time in the understairs cupboard so you can't get in and out of the kitchen too easily.
If you can, get a new fusebox fitted with surge protection. Saved us a small fortune in new appliances after a lightning strike on our road. Neighbours weren't so lucky
