Support thread for House Renovators/DIYers

Was wondering if anyone wanted to join me in a support thread for all of us doing lots of renovating, odd jobs, diy etc. This can be somewhere we can do some well deserved bragging on a job well done!

I have sooooo much DIY that needs to get done.

I almost finished the downstairs loo yesterday. All that needs to be done is a second coat of paint on the door and a towel rail and toilet roll holder to be put up.

Yesterday's Tada list:
Painted skirtings in loo 2x coats
Painted door frame in loo 2x coats
Painted door in loo 1 x coat
Put together and installed a small bathroom cabinet


I'm about to start putting together an Ikea book case so that I can get some of the books out of storage!

We've been planting too!

Went to a nursery and bought loads of plants, but have only so far planted about half of them. I need to clear the weeds out of where the others are going first!

I've also been building a tree house. Yes, that's right, half my house is unfinished and I have just taken two weeks to build a tree house . I tell myself that if I wait until the house is finished my children will have grown out of wanting one.

Bright blue bathroom is now white after two coats of obliterating paint. Gopping tiles will have to stay as too big a job to replace right now.

Got two questions for you people

1. An upstairs radiator has been leaking god know how long for but it's saturated an old wooden exposed beam in the sitting room downstairs and the plywood ceiling. We think we've managed to turn the radiator off so do I just let the ceiling and beam dry out on their own?

1. Where is good for curtain material? We nee new ones in the bathroom ds2's room and our en suite as a minimum with basically the whole downstairs needing doing as well. I'm handy with a sewing machine so will knock them up myself but having difficulty choosing the different fabrics. And obviously with this many curtains bedding doing cost is a consideration as well. So ideas of where to source please!

Ooh liara, my kids would kill for a treehouse! Unfortunately our Oak is the only big enough tree and it's not spread out enough for one to be feasible....I am planning to negociate them down to a wooden Wendy Shed!....

hinky you're UK based, right? I would either suggest a fabric warehouse/mill shop, or see if you can find a linen supplier in receivership/bankrupt/relocating stock clearence. We got some fab blackout thermal curtains from Mostyn's (who are online sellers now, but did clearance sales of some of their retail outlets last year when we had just moved). Bargainacious!

Rather annoyingly I think I can see through some of the
Paint job in our top room: but the recarpetting is going well, and I also put a new floorboard section into our eves cupboard where the original builders had left a chuffing great hole six inch gap. So it's now got an MDF section bolted in extremely firmly with a pair of iron re-enforcers!
So so many things to do, but with all our baby steps we'll get there!

Aethel, I didn't have the heart to put it in our big oak so ended up doing it over 3 much smaller trees, with another 3 posts concreted into the ground on the far side.

Much easier than trying to support it all on one tree, or maybe I'm a bit too much of a tree hugger to have the heart to put in enough bolts into a tree .
