Talk to me about...toilets!

Not the most glamorous of subjects, I know.

So, we're looking to making some changes to our bathroom, the first of which will be the toilet. Have had a nightmare with concealed cistern and concealed fittings, so know I want a close coupled one where I can access the cistern and the fittings for the seat.

I don't know what to do about the flush though. Is it possible to get a dual lever flush? I don't want to needlessly waste water, and we're on a meter but I'm a bit wary of buttons and imagine them to be less robust than lever and harder to fix. Am I misjudging?

You mean lavatories?

No, I mean toilets - I'm not American.

Dual flush loos are the norm now with a 3 & 6 litre flush. Unfortunately, the reduction in water though saving water, does effect the power of the flush, sometimes causing blockages. Flushing once for solids and once for paper is the norm for some people, negating any water saving.

They are a bit less robust than a lever but easily fixed.

try to avoid the ones with a split flush-button on top of the cistern lid. They seem to go wrong quite often and are a pig to repair. Same with the ones where the cistern is hidden inside a wall to make it difficult to get at posh.

I like a Flapper valve to flush.
