Tell me about wet rooms/walk in shower

Big renovation.
Thinking about family bathroom.
DH thinks wet room area is the way forward. Out current shower is one of those curved ones, tricky to clean where the glass overlaps IYKWIM.
I do think wet rooms look great but ££ to tank, tricky to clean & doesn't water get everywhere?
I'm thinking of a large walk in shower with a single glass screen & a floor level tray.
If you have any pros & cons I'd love to hear.
thanks

We have one something like this

Screen is straight but you can buy a return if you think it will splash out=we've never bothered and haven't had any issues

I lived in Greece where all showers are wet rooms. Works fine five months of the year in the Med, IF upstairs where you can leave a window open all day to dry it. Rest of the time is damp, and there's the muddy/dirty feet problem. Plus soggy towels and toilet roll.

can't see how it works in the UK at all! If it needs underfloor heating to make it vaguely feasible, that means using extra energy.

big shower seems much more reasonable, with a mat outside that you can wash and dry, and then lino/vinyl for the rest of the floor. No wet feet when heading for the toilet is a real luxury now.

this might be a good compromise?

Thanks so much for all the input, its invaluable

We had our bathroom made bigger so we have a walk in shower and it's just a menace. The whole place is usually flooded out by DS but he is not the most careful of people. When we get round to it we are going to have a shower over the bath with a screen. Far easier. Wet rooms are for swimming baths not houses. That's my opinion!

I think it all depends on the size of the room. If there is enough space for the shower area to be away from everywhere else, then wetroom style is great. However if the room is small and there is a chance that all parts of the floor will get wet, then an enclosure is best.
Re enclosure in your link - we had almost the same at our old house with a shallow shower tray - loved it too.

The bathroom is 4x3 metres, in there I'm hoping to fit double sinks, loo, bath & this fancy shower. I think it might work if the bath goes under the window.

I'm with specialsubject and viviennemary.
I don't understand why you would want to make all your bathroom wet, when you could confine any wetness to the shower cubicle. Confused
If I were looking to buy a house, it having a wet room would really put me off. That won't matter I suppose if you are staying in your house for the next 20 years or so ~ it's best to do what suits you - but might if you might have to move before then.
How old are your dc ? Have you seen a bathroom used by a teen ?

middleagedspread · 29/03/2013 16:45

I have 2 teens who are not known for their tidiness and this bathroom will be mostly used by them. The issue, in our existing bathroom, is the doors which sort of overlap in a curve & are impossible to clean.

The walk in shower would have no doors & be spacious & airy.
and in my fantasy world the teens would scrape & shower spray and keep the room immaculate

Can I join you in that fantasy world middle ? Grin

I think ours is about that sort of size. There's no enclosure involved, it's just a big room with a shower at one end. The loo and sink are at the other end (opposite wall to the shower) and the heated towel rail is at right angles to everything else (at the sink/loo end of the room).

Our wetroom is on the ground floor and as we live near an (extremely) sandy beach, being able to shower off sand rather than traipsing it through the house is great (for me, being the cleaner)
