textured plaster walls

Our hallway has textured walls - looks like they've used plaster or something to create a textured effect a bit like this - see the first pic

I think it looks awful.

Anyway, is the best thing we can do have it skimmed? We don't have much money and the hallway ceiling is very high and large so a big job. No way of DIYing as don't have the skills.

Or could I paint it and live with it?

my friend used a product called x-tex to remove her artex.
im having my ceilings plaster boarded and skimmed.
i might use the xtex on the walls though.

Skim!

The house we're planning to buy has a type of rough plaster on the walls of a couple of the rooms and I'm somewhat embarrassed to admit that I quite like it !!

In the right house doglover rough plaster can look like it should be there, a bit shabby chic or earthy. Artex/textured pattern just looks wrong in 99.9% of houses! (I'll give 0.1% of houses a chance, I just haven't seen them!). The previous owner of the house we are buying has artexted most ceilings and the whole hallway/stairs/landing! I'm not looking forward to getting it skimmed!

We will have to live with the walls until i win the lottery but I am going to try and get the ceilings done before we move in as its a very messy job!

I'd save up and skim - in the meantime, apologise like mad to visitors and reassure them it wasn't your decision to put it there. nb: some artex contains asbestos so don't try to chip it off unless you have it tested first.

Just about every wall and ceiling in every house I've been in, in the US has walls like that, I hated them at first, but now I don't even notice. Here it's not got asbestos in, just plain old plaster. I'm surrounded by it in my own house LOL.
