Adding doors to victorian open plan lounge/dining room

Hi
we are buying a house which has a cut out which makes the lounge and dining room open plan. i am not sure what was there originally but we would like to add doors to make it two separate rooms. does anyone have experience of this? would like period style doors.
thanks

how wide is the gap?

I would go for 4-panel or 6-panel doors. With luck, a near match for the originals. To reduce sound, go for 44mm thickness not 34mm. Fire-resisting doors are easily available and are suitable if you are going to paint them (solid wood panelled doors are expensive unless flimsy)

Parliament hinges can be used so they fold flat against the wall when open.

I'm guessing the stairs was moved at some point? I think that traditionally the stairs would have split the front and back room. This is what we currently have at the moment and I was vaguely thinking of making it open plan, but will most likely not and keep the rooms separated by the stairs still.

Sorry about bad grammar Grin

Thank you. Not sure if stairs were there. Although, I am not sure. The gap is About 2 metres wide.

It will be difficult to find doors a metre wide, I think the biggest usually available ready-made will be about 34 inches, maybe only 32. I have a feeling that it would look better with double doors than with three or more, or folding doors. A frame with side panels might do.

loads of Victorian houses like this. originally there would either have been a wall between the two rooms, or a wall with solid pine double doors in it (probably four panel doors as piglet says).

you can buy solid old pine Victorian doors from reclamation yards (much cheaper than buying new solid wood doors usually) but be careful to get ones that match and aren't warped. you will probably have to make the opening smaller for original double doors to fit. or add side panels as piglet says.

A friend of mine used to live in a very early Victorian house (sort of Georgian/Victorian cross-over period) & hers had original folding doors between 2 of the rooms. They looked lovely Smile

Are there doors to the hall from each end of the room? And are thre two fireplaces? If yes, it sounds as though they were two distinct rooms in which case there was likely originally a wall there.

Dividing doors are often found on Salvo. You could also have them made to measure, including the frame.

Hi little friends yes there are doors leading to hallway from lounge and dining room and two fireplaces. Thanks for eBay link -they are more expensive than I thought. Does anyone recommend any salvage yards to go to?

£700 my asre.

If it was me, I would get a pair of these and paint them.

Heavy, but solid-feeling and with blot out noise better than most.

itsmummynotmum · 26/03/2013 10:10

You could get ones that are glass in top 3/4 approx - we had them in our first home, stripped pine & had coloured glass in each corner, the main panel was all glass with narrower strips round the edges - wish you could put quick sketches on here! Could get ether reclaimed or surely a good chippie could make some? x

ewww. Piglet, those are horrid doors. Themight be functional, but would look all wrong.

Try Salvo for local salvage yards.
