Stair runner making my head explode....please help me put my brains back in my head..

House finished (hoorraaahhh) bar one thing....stair runner and landing carpet and sittingroom/bedroom curtains/lampshades but am ignoring those for now.

So hall is fairly open onto kitchen. Smoked oak floors (so mid brown - warm) Off white shaker kitchen visible from hall. Black granite. White walls. Splashes of muted colours (yellows, sage green). Calm. Warm. Traditional-ish but a bit of contemporary too.

Landing - white walls. 5 white 1930s style doors. Light. It feels contemporary, light, airy with original features (spindles/doors) thrown in. It is where we are going to hang some very contemporary pictures. Chunky canvasses with bright primary colours. Blue a dominant theme. As is orange on one. And red on another. We are keeping the pictures off ther stairs as the spindles create so much shading/ stripes the pitures to not work there - so all up on the landing.

So the muted downstairs (if that is what to call it) and the vibrant landing are separated.

Then head exploding into lots of red and grey mush I have to decide what stair runner to get. Spent last week painting the stairs....so started to look and wow - there are some amazing things out there...but I cannot even begin to work out where to start colour wise to "link" the two areas.

This is why my house is wood and white and black.

Please help me shove my brain back in my head....any colour suggestions? Any runner suggestions...and should I do the same on the long-ish landing or just pick out one colour...

sobs, pleads, begs for someone with colour know-how to help

Would one of those hempy, natural floor coverings work?
I'm thinking neutral.

wendybird77 · 17/03/2013 18:45

'Tis pricey, but this?

Not too quirky, but has something to it which I think will work both traditional and muted enough not to outshine your paintings.

betterwhenthesunshines · 17/03/2013 21:43

I'm not that keen on runners

FishfingersAreOK · 17/03/2013 21:48

Oh I like some of those Wendy....I am beginning to think I am asking too much of a carpet though. Maybe we should just put the art to one side for now (does not really fit in with the whole feel of the house which is much softer than our old one). We still have a loft to convert which will create a study out of one of the bedrooms...and will be turning the workshop into a home office at some point - so scope there for bringing out in a few years.

Seems such a shame though. Still love the pictures - just don't want them in the main rooms iyswim.

Have ordered a couple of samples - but please, anyone else with other thoughts/suggestions gratefully received!

Im with you on the stripes.

FunnysInLaJardin · 17/03/2013 21:53

we have this on our stairs and landing. Have had it for 8 years and it still looks really good

FishfingersAreOK · 17/03/2013 22:09

We have this sahara runner I chose this as it picks up the tones in the Minton tiles in our hall. Our house is Edwardian and the hall is pretty simple, original waist height rail with dark grey underneath and white above. The runner looks stunning, much better than a boring beige carpet that I was going to have originally. It does get dusty either side but its not a big deal, just needs a vacuum every few days :)

MrsHoarder · 18/03/2013 07:06

I'd go for white because then its a link to upstairs that should bring more light downstairs. Also consider your spindles well throw stripes without you adding them to the carpet.

Actually I'd go for a muddy grey, bit only because its easier to clean.

noddyholder · 18/03/2013 07:13

I would go plain striped runners are the feature walls of flooring. A light sage green or grey sisal wog look great

lightrain · 18/03/2013 07:17

I would go for a neutral, beige/ biscuity colour. That will tie it all together nicely and will allow your landing artwork to shine.

Tugamommy just gor a sample organised - of the blue and brown one.
And grey is an interesting thought....which led me to this: www.hartleytissier.com/stripes-flatweave-collection-1?ID=16

Which is to die for. No price indicated though....so odds on would be £££££

OK. So now am veering towards something a bit more subtle...not totally plain as per Noddy (how has the house clearance gone BTW?) but maybe something like the link - just a border down the edges.

Guys, guys, you are/are not helping Wink . My choices for deciding upon appear to have grown not shrunk!

Truthfully this is helping. Getting brains back in head and focussing.

Of course - majority of the samples I ordered last night may not be now what I want. Beginning to feel that as much as I would love a funky, multicoloured striped carpet it just will not work. Subtle, classy and understated may be the way to go....

So, maybe browny grey? Mink..mm maybe not....thinking I do like the border thing. This would tie in with my "triple" theme of the '30s house - 3 panneled doors, 3 grouped spindles, 3 stripes in the bathroom....

Keep 'em coming please Flowers

I went for two colour way stripe and do not regret it. It is quite forgiving... see here on my bloggy...colporter.tumblr.com/post/44538391500/moving-on

FunnysInLaJardin · 19/03/2013 16:58

freaky. The maker of my carpet posting on the thread and being deleted Confused

CaipirinhasAllRound · 20/03/2013 16:25

I wanted this but it was too wide for our stairs (plus bloody expensive)

in the end we went for this as a carpet (still bloody expensive) but they'd have made it into a runner if we'd wanted to. We've got white walls and it goes into bamboo flooring at the bottom of the stairs

I'd go for the same on the stairs and landing

staverton · 21/03/2013 21:15

I'm going for this I think
www.alternativeflooring.com/collection/wool/fine_lines__fine_wool__striped/pinstripe/moon_mineral_pin.html

(sorry on phone, can't do links properly)

Is it this that is becoming the feature wall noddy (ie dated) or those multitude striped runners. I've had enough of the latter.

noddyholder · 22/03/2013 07:04

I think that is lovely and they are v good supplier to deal with :)
