Who do you get to 'do' bathrooms?

is it good to go with Wickes or similar? Or are there plumbers who will do the entire room- replastering, tiling arrange new window etc? Or should we get different trades in for the different parts?
The whole room needs re-doing and after a Wickes quote for 4 kitchen units last year(£3000) my feeling is Not to use them.
Also any recommendations for companies in Kent/Sussex thanks

I asked my plumber and he gave me two numbers, both blokes who just do bathrooms, nothing else. We needed some building work (moving stud wall, lowering ceiling, floor levelling) and quotes were 3k and 3.5k. That didn't include any fittings though..... Without the building work it would have been about 2k

Ok that's a good idea. Thanks

We are in Kent and my BIL had Wickes to do one last year and he was very happy with them . My husband did ours ,took longer but he's a perfectionist and its brilliant .

We've just had a quote for 2k for someone to do ours - some boxing in, fan installed, all tiling, plastering etc as well as the usual. Do you know anybody that's just had one done? Just ask around

i am just getting bathroom done - we did it first 4 years ago but uses a cowboy and got the shittest job possible. thank god the suite wasnt expensive as its just gone into a skip. we had 5 leaks in 4 years, and the bath wasnt level so the tiles didnt fit right, had a gap down one side that leaked whenever shower was used....

this time i went to some local bathroom showrooms and asked for their recommendations.

the guy doing it this time is fab. he has done the lot, arranged for replastering, removed old suite and disposed of it, fitted new suite and shower, all tiling, floor, new window, new ceiling and spotlights, fan, new radiator....the works. He is doing a brilliant job. its taken 6 days. he has charged for everything including window (he has supplied this) £1800.

i bought suite and tiles, floor, ceiling etc separately at local showroom - cost £1900.

you can get people who do the whole thing - just ask around though. our first bathroom was an expensive mistake.

We bought all the bathroom bits online, got a plumber in to fit them, a builder/chippy mate of ours to do bits and bobs like shower enclosure and build a sink unit, and a tiler to do the floor/walls. Oh, and a plasterer for a new stretch of wall, and an electrician to fit the lights and connect up the power shower.......both friends of ours.

I agree there are easier ways, but we were doing a lot of work on our house at the time, and know quite a few tradesmen. Also, our bathroom had to be stripped down to the floor, as the joists were giving way.

It's easier to buy "off the peg" if you are replacing like-for-like, but we weren't.

Do you know where you're getting all the bits from? Have you looked at Victoria Plumb? Bargainous prices compared with many shops.

IAmSheWhoMustBeObeyed · 17/03/2013 19:49

Fussy- wow great price. Our DIY skills might extend to ripping tiles off but not much further.
Pom- I had heard that but as of yet have no firm plans.

Tiling is quite easy really. Even I can tile. Grin
