Possible extension but clueless - how do I go about it?

We have a patch of unused garden next to the house, but a bit awkward, on a bit of a slope. I think we could get a reasonable one or two storey extension on it, but I have no idea how I go about this.

Who do I approach? An architect? How do I find a good one?

I would be really grateful for any advice. I am seriously clueless about anything DIY/improvement related.

if you do not have any other extensions to the property you would not necessarily need planning it would come under permitted deveoplement. However if its an awkard as you say i would definately get an architect to look at the site a the first point of call. they would be able to advise you best as to costs builders and if any planning or building control permits are needed. Councils are not allowed to recommend trades so you need to find one yourself start with finding out whose local etc

Find an architect

I usually allow an hour or so 'free' to chat throught a potential client's aspirations, talk about their ideas and options, scribble a sketch or few and generally explore what is feasible and affordable.

If there is nice coffee / wine / cake then the hour can become quite 'elastic' :)

I'm not alone in this approach.

We're in the middle of an extension. Both the architect and builder were personal recommendations. We looked at some work the builder had done locally, again we sussed these out by word of mouth rather than him providing references, though he did offer some. so far so good- they are working like Trojans and the site is very tidy. Communications are good too.
