If you're having an extension, who are you insured with?

Just found our our home insurers won't cover us once the building work starts. I've done confused.com, and only got 2 results, neither of who I've heard of. Just wondered who everyone else uses.

Technically you should be covered under your builder's insurance, you should have asked for and seen his/their insurance certificate and contacted the company to make sure it is valid.

I'm not sure many companies would insure just in case the whole back of the house fell down Grin

We're covered with LV. I phoned them and let them know the work that we're having done (small extension and some interna walls being removed) and they've given me 60 days of cover. If I wanted longer cover, or if any part of the house was having its roof removed, then we would have had to fill in a form and get the underwriters to look at it.

We were with Direct Line and paid a bit to have insurance extended. We did not move out. We had to explain IIRC how the part of the house we were still in would be kept secure- there was always a locked door. You still need insurance for your contents and the rest of the house away from the extension.

The builder's insurance covers all the on-site stuff like his equipment and if he accidentally falls through the ceiling etc. (If he doesn't have insurance - run a mile Grin)

I would ring up a company you've heard of and talk to a human being. It might not be the cheapest but you can always re-insure once it's all done.

We were with the AA they just revoked a couple of clauses for the duration of the work.

Thank you for your replies. I'm with m and s, and they didn't want to know. I think I may try home protect, and yes, I still need to check the builder's insurance.
