Anyone made their own vanity unit for countertop basin from an old piece of furniture?

What did you do to waterproof the top?

I'd really like to do this but as the kids will be using it it needs to not get ruined easily!

I have seen it done, and think you need to have a countertop cut; either in marble, granite or melamine and háček either inset or undermounted sinks

We have just had one made and used a sandblasted glass top. You have to get the hole cut for the taps and basin drainage in exactly the right place so get the basin first. It looks great and the slightly greeny colour is good in the room, but the shiny top surface of glass looks as though it will show water marks easily. I would try searching for a local stone supplier - they may well have an offcut piece from another job you will get cheaply.

Height of the unit will dictate if you need an inset sink or counter top one ( test out the height of your existing sink to se how high you like it).

For an easier DIY, you could always tile - you won't need very many, it would be a more country rather than streamline look.

We covered the top in the same tiles (matt) as the shower room - had a Bol counter top sink on top - looked fab & totally waterproof.

We made a unit out of wood, painted it and then lots and lots of yacht varnish! It's holding up fine.

we had one cut from some kind of stone, it is pure white and I love it. Remember to ask for the edges to be bevelled, and I agree, you have to get the basin and taps first so the drainage holes can be cut exactly.

we have a countertop basin.

We made ours out of an old washstand it was then painted with a greenhouse/ blue sandolin paint.

We used a Chinese-style sideboard, which is a dark varnished elm wood - we didn't bother to put on a waterproof countertop, but used a deep, bowl-like countertop basin, which contains the splashes pretty well. I just give the wood a wipe with a towel if it gets splashed. After 6 or so years it still looks fine - maybe a weeny bit bashed and more rustic than at first . . . I love that it doesn't look too bathroomy, and it is so useful for storage, with both drawers and cupboards. I'd definitely do the same again, but maybe I'd use a stone countertop if I wanted it to look smarter. iheartdusty's white one sounds v nice.

I had an old pastry rolling cupboard from the old pantry (knocked it into the kitchen so can have a table in there) which had a marble top. Plumbers took it to the quarry and got two holes cut for sinks and we used circles of the left over marble to bump up the hight of the tap so they are on little circular marble stands. Looks pretty cool and would have easily cost me £800 new.
