Seperate toilet room or combined? We can't agree

Hi all, my husband and I are embarking on a project build.

In the plans, next to each other they have a separate toilet room - no washbasin and no room for one - and the bathroom with washbasin, shower and bath but no real storage.

I hate the fact the toilet doesn't have a washbasin and want to knock the wall between the rooms, thereby eliminating one of the doors and creating space for shelf unit or similar for towels etc. My husband thinks a separate toilet is a real bonus in a house and it's not that big a deal to go into a different room to wash your hands.

What do you all think?

We will have an ensuite in our bedroom so this will mainly be used by our son and any guests we have (we only have people stay 5/6 times a year for a few days at most)

what about that combined unit I suggested upthread?

The washbasin is on top of the cistern and water used to wash your hands goes into the cistern to be used to flush the loo.

Ohi just clicked into that Hecate, itsa great idea & solution but I don't love it tbh, I wonder how much they cost?
Very Eco friendly

I wonder how practical the basin on the cistern is in reality. In a narrow room it seems like it would be a stretch for children to reach over the toilet to the basin.

Children could kneel on the lid of the loo to wash hands, if they couldn't reach. It would have the added benefit of making them shut the damn thing after use!

And if you'd had a few drinks, the risk of slipping in would defo be raised, coming out of the bathroom with wet knees - not a great look

Mordecai, how long do you intend to live in this house? If its just a few years, and you hope to move, then do whatever is best for resale value. If it's your forever house, do what works best for your family living arrangements.

Probably around 10 years, if I have to keep it separate I'll squeeze in a washbasin somehow.

I'd prefer combined though to have extra storage just have to persuade dh to compromise.

It's funny how people over here think I'm overreacting to the hygiene aspect. The builder was really surprised I'd brought it up and most people I speak to see it as a non issue.

I was amazed they're still making plans for NEW houses that don't incorporate a sink with a toilet, I'd understand if we'd bought an old house and had to deal with it but not a brand new house plan!

Ten years is long enough to go for what you want rather than resale value imo.

Could you design it with an eye to being able to easily separate the toilet off with a stud wall before resale if necessary?

can you search for tiny miniature wash hand basins, there must be a few out there. A loo without a sink is awful!

tiny loo rather then full size one might create space too.
