Question about new carpets - advice please

Hi

OK, we have had our new carpet fitted throughout the house we are renovating. We don't live there at the moment.

It's a heather carpet Cormar Earl Grey but there are some 'patches' (especially a large patch in the centre of the living room and round the edges) which seem to be a different shade than the rest of the carpet. I believe that this is called shading in the industry (from googling) but it is still very visible a week after fitting. I called the carpet people out last week, the day after fitting, and they assured me that it was a matter of it laying and then would come out. It has not. I am not sure whether it is less visable because I can 'see it', iyswim.

There are also black spots on the carpet which are complete individual loops which are stiffer than the other wool loops. Not solid like a stick but 2 or 3 times harder to bend than the other loops. These are randomly spaced and on a light carpet look like dirt but obviously, being carpet fibre, will not come out. The sample we took home to try did not have these on them from memory.

We have had problem after problem with this renovation and we appear to be complaining at almost every stage. On the one hand we don't want to accept a carpet that is substandard but on the other are almost resigned to putting up with it in the hopes that when we have furniture in it won't be so noticeable.

Can anyone offer any advice? If I call the carpet people again I need to know what I want else they will fob me off saying it is OK. Does anyone please have any advice for me?

Many thanks in advance (again!)

I saw something similar on a watchdog programme where the carpet fibers were laying in the wrong direction causing marks or something. The company ended up replacing the entire carpet.

No real experience if it, however I would call back, insist on speaking to someone senior, be clear in terms of how you would like the issue resolved, don't get fobbed off. Stand your ground and get it dealt with. If its a big company take photos email CEO or get on to twitter.

Thanks jammybean. I think both dh and I must think that in the bottom of our hearts hence we can't just leave it...

It gauls because we spent so much entirely carpeting the house I don't want to regret leaving it in a few years.

I think you may have to push hard, as you'll probably live to regret it otherwise. You're entitled to make a complaint about a substandard product, so don't feel bad about making a fuss.

I'm pretty good at complaining Grin, as I said take the matter as high up in the company as you can. Google the CEO and email him if you're having little luck in getting it resolved. It's been a week. There's been no change. Insist they come out and inspect it/ replace it.
