Where do we stand on non-white bath panels?

I'm thinking maybe a walnut one. Nice? Or unspeakably vile?

My concern is cleaning, and whether it will overly restrict our flooring choices.

Choose your floor first. Done this twice now - or to be more accurate, not done this twice....bathroom designed and installed and then think Oh Fuck - what the hell do I put on the floor? There are zillions of vinyls out there for example...but most of them are vile. If youdon't want wood/wood effect or stone/stone effect you can suddenly find yourself/your bathroom buggered.

Choose floor.

Then think about bath panel.

And tbh how onorous is it really to wipe a white one down once a week?

Good advice. I meant a non white one with veneer might not stand up to cleaning as well as a white plastic one.

Plus you have to think about what will happen to it if it gets soaking wet...Won't it swell if it's a wood based material.

Ours did in last house. Was fine pre dc, but looked horrible after only a year of having dc. Splashy, messy kids.

Go for something different. DH boxed in our bath himself using a piece of plain wood cladding which he stained dark walnut. It looks so much more interesting than a plain white panel. I just clean it by wiping with the wet cloth after I've cleaned inside.

doradoo · 06/03/2013 12:51

Or have a tiled one in the same tiles as your floor?

FireOverBabylon · 06/03/2013 12:55

We have similar to BirdyBedtime, and painted in with bright red gloss paint to make it waterproof (black and white bathroom).

Go for it.

This isn't our 'forever' house, so we're trying to cater for future people's taste and possible tenants.

We have wooden tongue and groove on the side of our bath. I undercoated and then painted on two layers of matt gloss paint (iyswim- it's actually for woddwork in a child's bedroom and has buzz lightyear on the side, but most gloss paint is, well, glossy so needs must).

This was pre dcs, two splashy dcs later and it's fine, which is lucky as it never occurred to me it could be a problem.

HappyGirlNow · 06/03/2013 13:11

I think tiling up the side of the bath (if you're tiling floors/wall) looks great!

noddyholder · 06/03/2013 13:35

I woud never have white! SO walnut/tiled would be my preference I never buy the one that comes with the bath looks cheapy and you can get a marine ply one made and tiled which looks lovely.

ZolaBuddleia · 06/03/2013 13:36

We're tiling walls but probably not floor due to shonky boards. Hhm, the tongue & groove idea could be nice.

DH built an MDF panel and shelf around the bath (for the Wine) and then we tiled it the same as the tiles around the bath, sink and windowsill.

Thanks for starting this.
Am re-doing our bathroom soon and have never considered tiling up the sides.

And wood with undercoat and gloss for waterproofing. Why did I never think of this?
I learn so much from mumsnet.

Hope you enjoy doing the bathroom. I'm at the 'looking at a Fired Earth catalogue for inspiration' stage..Smile

I'm rather Envy, our budget and space extend as far as Ikea and Homebase!
