Does this roofing job sound like a botch job?

Just had a quote to fix both our chimney heads. Both need re-rendered. Company has said they would chip off most loose render but not all old render, then attach a wire mesh on to which the new render would be applied.

I know the 'correct' way would be to take it all off and layer it up but the company tell me this other way is perfectly good and much cheaper.

Is this a botch job?

I dont know.

Important to me would be how well the old render is adhering. If it is loose old lime pebbledash it will fall off. If modern brickwork and cement, not cracked and not loose, it would be a fair amount of scrabbling to get it off (though if they are ererecting scaffold, as they should, and not hanging off a ladder, they can use power tools that will zip through it)

Did you have them personally recommended, and have you seen similar samples of their work?

Btw it is essential to use stainless epm or mesh and fixings, not galvanised which will rust.

My DP has a roofing company and he says this is fine as long as the mesh is fixed properly.

pigletjohn I live remotely and find getting anything done a nightmare. Have been trying to get a local guy recommended by many but he just isnt getting back to me. So in nearest city I found a big company and they have a comprehensive website showing previous work etc. All seems fine there.
But on the quote it states 'galvanised expanded lath'. Should I query this?

Thanks happygirl that's good to know.

I would. Galvanised EML is described as "for internal use" because it will rust quite quickly outdoors. It used to be popular but plasterers and renderers sneer at it now, same for anglebead and bell.

here are some examples of stainless vs. galvanised mesh

There should be a modest extra cost in materials, but no more labour cost for stainless.

Mr Happy may know more.
