Stainless steel worktop - good or bad idea?

tostaky · 28/02/2013 21:08

Am I going to spend my time wiping baby oil to maintain it clean? Or is it going to be ok?
(white handeless kitchen)

I was originally considering super white quartz but I'm thinking steel will break up the all-white/too clinical look + industrial-chic and stainless steel will coordinate with the hood extractor and the splashback/feature wall.

Your thoughts?

Watching with interest

We have just a tiny section near sink, with the rest of the worktops wood, and though it looks great I'd be v wary of a bigger area if like us you live in a hard water area. You'll spend your life trying to clean off water marks! Aesthetically though it is fantastic.

We are in London... So yes, pretty hard water. And I was thinking about having white quartz for the main kitchen and stainless steel for the island (with sink)
So maybe not then....

Bad. Its a nightmare to keep looking nice. Wood looks good

LavenderBombshell · 28/02/2013 21:54

I have had it beforeon an island and am doing it again now . I think it is fabulous . It will develop a patina but to my eye it still looks good. No worries about hot pans etc. From me , a big thumbs up .

Lavender - Even with a sink on the island?

(thinking about locating both the sink and hob on the wall kitchen)

My suggestion is to go for granite. Looks good and is durable.

LavenderBombshell · 28/02/2013 22:23

Well this time I am actually going for all stainless steel and the sink will be integral to the SS worktop.

Itlooks like I am in a minority here and I think other worktops look fab - I've had corian , granite and wood before but the SS was my favourite. Just my opinion though.

SwedishEdith · 28/02/2013 23:29

Is it clattery? I like that industrial look but wonder if it's very noisy.

LavenderBombshell · 01/03/2013 08:21

SE

I didn't find so , but I am usually the only one using it (I not a massive team of chefs turning out 200 covers !)

tostaky · 01/03/2013 13:42

Thank you...
I think I will go for the quartz, less fuss... Debating whether to get a SS sink but I guess I should just stick to something easier to clean...

I have total stainless steel worktop and we are moving house, I would rip it out and take it with me. Great for cooking, hot pans and easy to keep clean. It does develop and patina after a while and I have never wiped it down with baby oil.

impecuniousmarmoset · 01/03/2013 18:36

any tips for removing hard water marks from it?:) Ours is looking a bit rubbish really - 'patina' would be great but this is more like a film of white gunk!

RavenVonChaos · 03/03/2013 15:42

try professional class cleaner.

Best stuff we have used is a product called bar keepers friend, they used to sell it in Sainsburys and Tesco's, and I think you can get it off Amazon. It comes in a powder and you apply it with a wet sponge, its a bit life Cif only better. Its an American product I think.

It gets limescale off a treat around our taps, and it also seems to brighten up the metal a bit making it looks newer. Needs a bit of elbow grease but works a treat.

We got our stainless steel worktops two years ago from these guys:

www.dsmstainlessproducts.co.uk/stainless-steel-products/catering-stainless-steel/stainless-steel-worktops/

It was them that recommended the stuff to us, they sell it too, but its cheaper on Amazon, which is where I get it from. Our worktops looks great even with a family of four using them constantly, and I only need to use the bar keepers friend every couple of months or so to keep the tops looking good.

No idea on stainless steel worktop, but if you're still dithering on sink placement would strongly consider not island. Sinks are a magnet for crap waiting to be dealt with - bits and bobs that can't go in the dishwasher etc. And people seem to leave dirty stuff by the sink even if it can go in the dishwasher. If you put it on the island all that stuff is very visible in the middle of the room.

I have I one and I love it to bits. If I could take it with me when I move I would. It has a lovely patina, requires no maintenance and you can put oven pans down anywhere without worry!
