Anyone have internal sliding doors, sitting flush within the wall?

In the process on buying a newly converted barn but the hallway layout doesn't quite feel right. I'd like the developer to add another door way into the living room not sure if it will work.

So as you walk in, you have a decent sized hallway with the stairs directly in front. To the left is the kitchen leading to open plan vaulted dining room then double doors to the living room. Its a bit odd to always have to go via kitchen, dining room to get to living room?!

I was thinking sliding doors that sit either within the wall may be the best option. Has anyone done this? Is it ridiculously expensive?

My DH has just fitted one of these as we are renovating our bathroom. It's easy enough to do if the wall has not yet been constructed, I think. You build two walls with the cavity between to hold the door and the sliding mechanism. I went to a house a while ago that had sliding doors fitted to the dining room and they were great as it was a large opening (double doors), and you could either close the dining room off completely, or have them open and there was a great flow through space to the living room when entertaining. I should point out we are in the US, so I suppose there may be a different type of fitting.

They are called pocket sliding doors. We have the eclisse system in our house, brilliant, highly recommended. It is a bit expensive, but so worth it. The space it saves around where you would normally have to have the door is invaluable in our small house. It is easy to put in if the walls have not been built yet.

I like the look of them, how much did they cost?

jammybean · 28/02/2013 13:31

Hmm that might be a slight problem as the wall is already up.

If the wall is built, I see on the website there is also a wall mounted option, you can see it on the prices page.

For a single door system around £250 or so for the kit. You need to buy the door as well though, but in a contemporary setting you can get a fairly basic looking flat door panel and paint it, so you don't have to get an expensive door. Prices are on the website (nothing to do with them by the way, just have them in our loft conversion).

Thanks fapl... just looking at the wall mounted ones. Just not sure of the fittings. I think something that looks more industrial would fit the setting better. Now, just to find it.

You could just get the track and not the pelmet.

I was thinking of this. I can't seem to see any uk suppliers of something similar.
