my husband is getting a teaching job at nottingham ningbo university, china. we want to buy and keep a house in nottingham as he'll have to visit the university nottingham regulary. we would like to buy a house in an area which is family oriented, but a house that we could also rent partly and use partly to keep our stuff. in the long run we may live in nottingham. we are british indians and have a 13 year old daughter. any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Beeston would be a good choice imo. A reasonable town centre, close to the university and not too studenty. When I was there at university (admittedly a few years ago now) it tended to be popular with mature students and postgrads so renting would be an option.

Have a look at Wollaton, close to the hospital and the university but a good family area.

Lenton, beeston will rent easily to students.

Mapperley park will rent easily to families.

West Bridgford, Mapperley Park, The Park and Wollaton are all nice areas.

Would you like to buy my house?

Not really, it's not in the best area for you.

Wollaton is a nice residential family area, Beeston nice but more studenty, both close to the University and it should be easy to let out a property there to university or QMC hospital staff.

Further afield, West Bridgford is good for state schools and families but more expensive. Woodthorpe and Mapperley Park are very nice, The Park quite lovely, though local schools are not so great and I think most families in those areas go private.

Sorry for the delay in my response. Thank you very much all the useful advice you have all provided. I'll start exploring the areas you have suggested.

I've no experience of renting out. Does anyone of you have that experience? If so, any advice on how to choose estate agents to find the renter and look after the rented house.

Thanks!!!

How is the area Hucknall like?

Thanks!

Hucknall is ok but a bit scruffy - hence affordable. It has the 'ex mining town' vibe, not pretty but has the advantage over some areas of being a proper small town. It is very well connected to Nottingham town centre by the tram, which will soon go on to Beeston, allowing an easy commute.

GW297 · 24/02/2013 23:41

Agree - very diplomatically put!

ILikeBirds · 25/02/2013 06:56

Hucknall is better than a lot of ex-mining towns and it has some decent schools but it's not to everyone's tastes. It's a lot less multi-cultural than a nottingham suburb would be.

freshaish · 25/02/2013 14:04

All the comments on Hucknall, appreciate them very much, they are really helpful!!!

Another thought is I've no idea what the rental market is like in Hucknall. It's nowhere near the university and I'm struggling to think of a major employer nearby, so there won't be the vibrant rental market that there is in Beeston. It could be very slow and limited.

Rolls Royce are in Hucknall. You're close to the M1 and Sherwood Business Park (Eon, Boots) 15 minutes to Nottingham on the train.

Ah, something quite large then! That sounds quite healthy. I suppose my point more generally is that I've let out a house in an area of Nottingham that is not particularly close to the universities but in easy walking distance of the town centre, it's been quite hard to get tenants and most are on HB (nothing against them, not keen on the system, whole other thread!). Friends in Beeston though have no trouble at all getting lodgers and there are lots of rented houses there, at many income levels, catering to hospital and university staff as well as students.

freshaish · 25/02/2013 22:58

Thank you again for helping me to understand the renting situation. Beeston does look a more attractive place for upping the chances for finding a renter.
