Does anyone know the Nottingham housing market - west side of city

Thanks to a job offer (yey) we are going to be moving from Manchester to Nottingham and are going to be FTBers. We are looking at anywhere between the M1 and QMC, so can anyone tell me anything about what the housing market is doing in Nottingham and roughly how close are people getting close to their asking prices?

Our budget is 105 - 115 (we could go a little higher but it would be a stretch). There are a few houses in Stapleford, Long Eaton that are 120-125, and whilst we are in a good position and looking to complete as quick as poss, I will stop looking at the houses at 125k if most really are selling for around that amount.

I am looking at right move sold prices but I'm trying to get a wider picture of a city I've only so far been to once!

Thank you

If you don't mind ex council these are really solid houses with decent sized rooms. Open land to the rear for dog walking. 228 bus goes hucknall to qmc direct but there are other options too. 15 minutes on the train to the city centre. Band A properties so cheap council tax

nickelbabe · 06/03/2013 15:57

what about Carlton?
it's more small townish in its existence - is cheaper than the villages, and is very well served by public transport, schools and leisure facilities.

you need to look at Carlton Hill rather than Carlton Valley.

nickelbabe · 06/03/2013 15:59

QMC the best places to live nearby are Beeston and Wollaton, really.
but Wollaton is expensive.

you don't want to go as far as Sherwood, because the only buses are round the ring road and they take hours to get there in the mornings!
Basford is too far, as well as being rough.

Don't look at Radford or Lenton, because they are very studenty and rather rough.

Yeah, Hucknall's Okay.

Badvoc · 06/03/2013 16:16

Was it your move? or IMS? both of those are crap IMO
Wallace jones are pretty good

nickelbabe · 06/03/2013 16:16

but the buses from Hucknall aren't very frequent.

Badvoc · 06/03/2013 16:17

Toton?
Chilwell?

ILikeBirds · 06/03/2013 16:28

Yes, Hucknall is a compromise on travel to qmc. I'd personally bike from hucknall to there and advantages of hucknall for me outweigh disadvantages (i commute to jubilee campus) but op's prob got other priorities. Train then bus to qmc can be quicker than direct bus. Will be even easier with tram once completed.

Beeston is too hemmed in for me, hate battling through traffic no matter which way you head.

LadyMaryQuiteContrary · 06/03/2013 16:31

There's a bus from Stapleford which goes past the QMC every 10 minutes. It's OK once you're out of the town as there's a bus lane, but the lane stops at the University/Wollaton Park. It takes 20 minutes to get to the QMC from here (usually). If your dp is working shifts then the traffic won't be a problem as it gets silly at 8am. The buses run from about 6am until midnight.

Badvoc · 06/03/2013 16:41

I used to work at QMC and I caught the bus every day and it dropped me right outside.

Sherwood is nice, there's a good high street and great bus links to city centre- popular ftb young professional area. Sherwood proper has lots of victorian housing, edward's lane area is further out and will be ex council, estate agent sherwood estends well into Basford.

blowers bros used to have a lot of sherwood housing.

We have now spent a couple of days trekking around Nottingham and doing lots of house viewings. thanks for everyone's advice and comments.

We think we have narrowed down our search area to Chilwell/Beeston and I just thought I would come back to report I've seen an amazing house which had an indoor fish pond complete with fish and fountain - right in the living room and I don't think anything can beat that!! The EA didn't include this feature in the listing or else I would let you all see for yourself on RightMove!

Chilwell is nice.

LadyMaryQuiteContrary · 09/03/2013 14:21

Who wouldn't want an indoor fish pond? Confused

Beeston is nice. Don't forget the mumsnet local site for meet ups etc. It can be hard to move to a new place, especially when you don't know anyone.

DoughaDeer · 10/03/2013 12:56

Another vote for Chilwell! I sob when I go back and see the prices! Would move back in a shot if possible. My mum is still there - tram coming, loads of buses, can walk into Beeston and a short hop to Long Eaton. A while off yet but HS2 proposed for Toton, so I imagine that will be a welcome addition for many.

Resurrecting this thread as I'm interested in a potential relocation to Nottingham from down south 😀

The location of interest is the Titchfield Park area of Hucknall. My prime concerns are about whether this is a safe area for young families - I've heard that the park may have had its share of problems in the past, but walking around it recently it seems very pleasant - and the quality of the primary and secondary schools. I'm happy with the proximity of the motorway, train / tram station and the shops, but not sure about other local facilities. I know Hucknall is expanding but not sure whether this means public services - schools, GP surgeries and local sports facilities - are scarce? (Realistically the kids won't be bowling anytime soon!). And how difficult (or long) is the commute if I needed to get to QMC by public transport?

Looking forward to responses from posters with local knowledge.

I think it would be easier if you started your own thread, you might get more replies.
