Kitchen unit sizing

I'm looking to replace my IKEA kitchen which is on its last legs. I've been trawling the web for something a bit nicer but not mega-bucks, and had pretty much decided on DIY kitchens. However, I've just realised that as well as the service void at the back of the base units (which IKEA doesn't have), the DIY kitchens wall units are 5cm shallower, and the shelves are not full depth (so another 2cm off?)

Kitchen is really small and I don't want to lose storage. Most of our storage is in wall units and we can't really fit more in. Does anyone have a kitchen with deeper units? IKEA are 35cm, DIY kitchens 30cm, Howdens 29cm, B&Q 33 but people say they are more expensive and not as good quality as DIY kitchens. Also, hardly anyone except IKEA and DIY kitchens do the 40cm base multi-drawer unit that we need.

Deeper bases would be nice too as otherwise we'll have to move some pipes for access, though I'd resigned myself to that. It's the wall units that are doing my head in. Help!

Bump!

I know it's a boring subject but surely someone has some deep cupboards they can recommend?

I would say ikea every time.
Can you not replace the doors on your original ikea kitchen.

You could phone up DIY kitchens and ask if they could do say a 50mm deeper wall unit? It might only be a 10% surcharge. They make all the units to order. I know because on my order I had asked for extended sides on a unit and they said they could have made it deeper if needed to fit round an appliance or something.

The base unit is 52cm deep inside, except the top 15cm or so where the top rail is at the back. Less than Ikea but about ten times as sturdy.

You could also look at Schueller kitchens who appear to do a lot of different sizes but they might be £££?

I just checked on the website - it does indeed say you can ask for units of a non-standard depth. I guess with base units you might have a worktop issue, although a lovely deep worktop on at least one side would be a brilliant work space.

I got a local joiners to do our kitchen - bespoke sizes, solid wood doors, fitted - cheaper than a standard ikea flatpack, unfitted!!! Grin

"Can you not replace the doors on your original ikea kitchen. "

Carcases are getting manky too. We need to take the kitchen out to replace the floor, with now-broken vinyl tiles that I stuck on the hugely ugly laminate installed by previous owners, that goes right across the floor. So to get a decent floor we need to take the units out, and if we're going to all that trouble I want to put non-manky ones back in!

Ooh, thanks fossil, I didn't spot that. It's the wall units that are my main concern, so no worktop issue. Might be worth a go. Smile

I've wondered about this too - but no idea where to start! I might find some amazing joiner who does a brilliant job or a rotten one who charges me an arm and a leg for wonky units. Confused

The joiner I used has also fitted a kitchen for my parents - 200 miles away.... Yes, they needed to come up and see the kitchens, no the joiners don't have a proper showroom and you have to come when they're working which isn't standard hours - yes, my parents (and two other friends I told about them) are pleased with the end result.

Haven't found sizes on the Schueller site yet. Their kitchens look designed for spaceships. Grin

Big spaceships!

flick right to the back of that Schueller brochure to find some schematics

We thought about having deeper wall units in our kitchen but I was worried about them making the work surface dark so decided against them in the end as space wasn't at such a premium. We're getting our kitchen from the DH of a MNer and he's been really helpful (and patient with all my dithering!) - its worth messaging annalouiseh to see what he recommends

NotGoodNotBad · 06/02/2013 16:58

Phoned DIY kitchens and they first said no they couldn't make deeper units, then I said it was on their website that they could alter some units to custom sizes, so the newbie girl went off to check and then said yes they can, for £18 extra per unit.

Have started a spreadsheet. Smile
